VDO gauge Q. ALL

Lucky junkyard find - in a SAAB of all things!

VDO gauges

Volts: much better than Volvo OEM because it actually has markings!

PSI: 0-150. Can't imagine what this was used for because 150psi seems like a LOT for oil pressure, unless SAABS are goofy. (no flamewar, please) 150psi is like 10bar. Stock Volvo is only 5 bar. Can/should I use this for oil anyway?

Continental Imports website shows a couple of possibilities for senders:

0-150 PSI M10x1K 7.0 PSI 30/9 360-023

0-150 PSI M12x1.5K 7.0 PSI 30/22 360-024

One of these is presumably correct for B21/23. Which is it?

Re: VDO gauge Q. ALL

So, are you saying that these will fit into the Volvo instrument cluster? Or how are you going to mount them?

Re: VDO gauge mounting. ALL

The gauges are destined for my '84 245DL. I have converted from the big clock to the big tach/small clock from the GL line.

Below the clock, I have the voltmeter from a Turbo. This will be replaced by the VDO voltmeter. Since my radio is high-mount and has a clock, I will remove the clock and replace it with the pressure gauge.

Virtually any 2 1/16" gauge will fit in the 2 holes next to the cluster with easily obtained parts.

Re: VDO gauge mounting. ALL

I've been toying with an idea to remove the center vents to mount three additional gauges in the dash. The turbo three-gauge panel could be modified to fit beneath the existing three gauges.

I'd like to include an oil temp gauge. Also, a fuel pressure gauge might be an interesting idea. And a turbo temperature gauge would be a welcome addition. Maybe an ammeter.

With the clock gone, you could have eight instruments in there.

Re: VDO gauge mounting. ALL

You could also mount a modified 3 gauge pod on top of the dash, above the existing 3 gauge panel. Click here to see an example. I was thinking of trying to put a gauge in place of the small air vent to the left of the steering wheel.

Re: VDO gauge mounting. - I'll bite ALL

ok. I've gotta go for this.

You've got the main cluster plus 5 other 2" positions using the turbo cluster.

Whaddaya need 3 more for?...

Lemme guess...

Clock

Volts

oil press

oil temp

vacuum OR turbo

ambient temp

(auto) tranny temp

exhaust pyrometer or air/fuel ratio

geez, that's a lot of info, Don. Maybe you can add a couple of a-pillar pods, too. Driver Blood Pressure? Driver Rectal Thermometer?

I think there was an R-Sport pod to mount 3 more above the useless center dash speaker grille, too, Don. Maybe I can come up with some more...

Talk about too much information!

Re: VDO gauge mounting. - I'll bite ALL

Well, let's see.

System voltage.

Charging current.

Oil pressure.

Oil temperature.

Turbo (or exhaust) temp.

Boost/vacuum.

Ambient temperature.

Fuel pressure.

Now if modify my old R-Sport cluster (from my '75) to fit my '82, then oil pressure and voltage are provided, so I can reinstall my clock.

The remaining spot could accept a digital compass.

But, yes, I like your idea about real-time blood pressure monitor. Hell, with all that data it's likely to drive my pressure to 600/300. Oops, that's 40bar/20bar.

And I'll never actually drive the car, so I won't need the digital compass, so I can install a fresh-air vent to cool the sweat from my face. I mean, all those numbers, those numbers................

And I'm designing a new panel to replace the ash tray. I figure six more switches.......

Re: VDO gauge Q. ALL

Sure it's an oil pressure gauge,10 bar, just like the R-sport gauges in 74-80 Volvo's.

I've seen an 8 bar gauge out of a Porsche, so I don't think it's too odd. Maybe for some cars the 8 bar gauge is like the 3 bar Volvo gauge (not quite enough) and the 10 bar is the better choice (like the 5 bar Volvo gauge). I don't really know, I'm just offering a theory.
