strong pull to the left 200 1978

My 240 was pulling to the left, so I took it in for an alignment. The technician said (after doing the "alignment") that it would need to be taken to a frame shop for a frame adjustment. The car still pulls to the left just as much as it did. What options do I have? Is a frame shop the next step?

    /// Start with the basics. Is there a stuck caliper? The Volvo three wheel brake circuit system causes steering when a rear caliper freezes or when a front caliper is stuck and does not relax after the brakes are applied, or when one circuit fails. There is a chemical reaction between American Dot 3 and Girling brake seals that will cause this problem. Look at the brake fluid and see if it is black or dark brown and opaque. It should be clear and amber although it darkens with moisture content. (NOTE this only applies to Girling systems.)

    As a former tire store manager I can tell you that there are tire failures and defects that will cause steering. The complete failure of a belt in a front tire will cause this steering. With your post it would be inside the left tire or outside the right. I can post directions for you to self test but a shop radial runout gauge is best.

    Rear bushings can cause steering if they are loose, worn out. Maybe this is the reason the alignment tech suggested the frame shop. The front to rear alignment is out. He should have spotted worn bushings, defective tires, or bad brakes and not done a front end alignment. He should not have done any alignment if the frame is bent from wreck damage. It would have to be done over if there is such damage. In this case, wreck damage, alignment is useless.

    Make a decision on using this shop again based on the final solution of the problem.

    Brian, our 77 240 pulls to the left also. the problem with ours was a difference in pressure in the power steering. try turning off the engine and coasting and see if the pulling stops.

    Did you see the camber settings? If he was unable to set camber enough to meet spec, you could have bent parts. However,if you have a camgear power steering rack, there is an adjuistment of the power assist which can cause a bad pull. Take the ps belt off and go for a drive. Beware of extra effort, but if the pull is gone, or possibly moved to the other direction because it was aligned to compensate, the spool needs to be centered.

    There is a cap on the bottom of the rack, opposite where the steering column enters, with two 13mm bolts holding it on. Remove the cap, watch for a sleeve which may or may not be loose. If the sleeve slips down, you need to hold it in place with a couple of washers and bolts so it cannot move. There is a 16 mm nut on the end of the shaft, locked with a metal washer. Remove the bolt and washer, and there is a sleeve with one notch on the end of it. By rotating that sleeve, you move the valve up and down.. It is easiest with two people, but start the car,turn the steering wheel both directions, and move the sleeve up or down until the assist is the same both directions. Relock the nut, using a new washer if the tabs are broken off, and then figure out whether the rack boot is open on the left side. In cold territory, water goes in the cracked boot, runs down and freezes around the lock nut, and when you turn the steering wheel you loosen it.
