Bulb Failure Indicator 700 1986

Hi all - I have a problem with my bulb failure indicator and I don't want to just disable it. It has been very faithful so far in telling me when a bulb is out, so I am trusting it is trying to tell me something this time. Here is what it does: It goes on when I turn on the headlights, but only stays on with the low beams. When I turn on the high beams (the lows stay on when the highs are on), the amber light goes out. Anyone have any ideas? Not a life-altering situation here, but it leads me to wonder if the relay for the lights is going bad, as I have been having problems with the electric locks working intermittently, and the central locking system and the main light relay are the same (K, I believe).

Let me know if you have any ideas, all you experts! Thanks.

Re: Bulb Failure Indicator 700 1986

Well, I figured it out. When I got my car inspected, they replaced one of the two low-beam lamps and that was what caused it. I now have the second Wagner halogen lamp to put in and that should do it. These bulb failure indicators are a little skittish, wouldn't you say?

Any advice on replacing the directional signal relay?

You probably have mismatched low beams. Possibly 1 halogen and 1 non halogen? Or both halogen of different manufacturers? Also possible ground problem or dirty/corroded terminals at the headlight conectors. Try a pair of new Wagner halogen low beams.

Re: Bulb Failure Indicator 700 1986

I used to have my bulb warning light come on when no bulb was out. A friend of mine who worked a Volvo parts desk told me to only use Volvo OEM bulbs. Sure enough, I replaced a sidemarker bulb from Napa with a Volvo one and it's been fine ever since. Since the indicator system works on resistance, I think that there might be variations in the resistance of the bulbs when comparing OEM to aftermarket.
