What the hell??!? 200 88

ok, so I am stuck in traffic ion the way home crawling 5 miles in about 45 minutes. I noticed that my car wouldn't stop, or atleast was making funny movements. It turns out that the front wheels and the rear divers side will stop and even lock when they should. but the rear passengers side doesn't stop and because it is snowy and slick out, spins and spins until I practically stomp on it.. I could use the emergency brake to almost control that wheel but it still sent the car drifting sideways going only 3-4 mph.

what could this be? Thr tire still has good trend on it, the caliper, pad and rotors are only about 6 months old. I noticed that if I shifted into N, AW70, the engine would race up to about 2100 rpm before settling at 1200. Could the kick-down cable I have been meaning the replace be the culperate?

Could my car just be on crack?

Peter B

dear god, please don't let it be the differential thingy.

Apart from a master cylinder problem, the pistons on that wheel could be seized or that disk may be contaminated (oil).

If the pistons are seized, repair both rear calipers because you may have uneven braking afterwards.

OK, so here's what is going on. All the clues were in your description of the problem. Very slick road conditions, stop and go at creeping speed & an Auto tranny.

If you leave the tranny in Drive and try to come to a gentle stop in these conditions, a rear wheel drive car will do exactly what you experienced.

The front wheels will stop and one rear wheel will stop, but because the tranny is in first gear, the engine will overpower the one rear brake and it will continue to rotate (unless you really stand on it) causing the rear of the car to squirm or even head for the ditch.

The solution is easy, bump it into neutral just before you come to a stop when you are driving in these conditions.

Could be a failing master cylinder (maybe the warning light thingy has also failed). It could be a frozen rear caliper. It could be a failed flex hose to the differential (the one feeding the rear PS caliper).

Diagnostics would help anser the question.

Doesn't sound like a bad diff. And those things almost never fail on the 240s.

"...engine would race up to about 2100 rpm...could the kick-down cable I have been meaning the replace be the culperate?"

Of the high idle? No. But a gummed up CIS motor (aka IAV) could.

"Could my car just be on crack?"

    No doubt that's it!

wouls a failing master cylinder effect only one wheel?

/// YEP---It's not affecting just one wheel. You have two three wheel systems. Two front and one rear on one circuit and two front and the other rear on the second circuit. The master cylinder is divided and one half is plumbed to each circuit. One circuit has failed and the brake failure light should have come on. It should have unless the rear caliper is frozen. Then the pressure would be the same in both circuits and the failure light would not come on.

Check you brake fluid when you inspect the brakes. If it is not clear and amber repost. There are other problems that can cause frozen calipers.
