Odometer 200 83

Anyone else out there with a broken odometer?

10 months ago when I got my car it was working, but I got the crazy idea to reset the trip odometer, to see what kind of mileage I was getting. Well that was the end of the trip odometer and odometer. After I first pushed that dreadful button, it would turn to .09 miles and stop. That happened several times till i just left it alone. Now everyonce in a while i'll notice a few more miles added on, but it sure isn't what i'm putting on the car.

Is there something I can do about this? A mechanic told me that it was probably better not to fool with it. But i'm curious as to what's wrong and compelled by the idea that it might be able to be fixed.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Happens to everyone - but its easily fixed. Go to a pick & pull and grab one from an '84-'85, one with the 120MPH speedo (because you probably have the crappy 85MPH version.) Its straightforward to replace, I just did mine this weekend in about 15min. Just make sure you get the right ratio - on the speedo face you'll see either r0,980 or r0,960 - get one that matches yours.

In reference to your broken speedo, yes they can be repaired.

On the 83, it is a mechanical speedo (cable driven.) It can be repaired at any speedo shop that does foriegn (VDO) speedos. Cost should be between $55 and $75 for a complete rebuild. This should include the fix, a lubrication of the mechanism, and a calibration of the speedo itself. If you want, they can even put more miles on it for you! Getting miles taken off is another story...

The good thing about the mechanical speedos is the fact that you can drive the car without the instrument cluster. This means you can pull the whole cluster, drop it off or ship it, and still drive the car. Can't do this with 86+ 240's

I've listed two shops below depending on your location:

    www.paspeedo.com

    www.speedometer.com

and Cape Coral Speedometer in FL somewhere...

Everybody out there has a broken odo. There is a little plastic gear that drives the odo that cracks and won't turn the shaft enough to spin more tan one digit. I have never found a decent fix, but I'm sure someone out there in brickland has.

I too have an odometer that has stopped (at 202 thousand kilometres). I asked my volvo parts supplier, and they told me a new speedo assembly was the only fix. Offered me a second hand one for $50. Haven't got it yet (more important things to attend to)
