cleaning stock wheels 700 '89

Anyone got a good way to clean brake dust off the stock wheels with the 2" square "pockets" connecting the outside rim with the flat wheel cover center?

I tried Castrol "Super Clean" spray, zero residue brake parts cleaner + a couple other commercial wheel cleaners, they're "not" no touch. I have to "tooth brush" each cavity which is a pain, but they look really nice when clean.

I also sealed the depressions with clear lacquer hoping that'd be more slippery than the silver paint, but it's not.

Best way I've found is a thin limp nylon scrubber with dishwashing liquid and water for cutting it.

Your suggestions please.

Steve:

I've had good luck using a bottle brush on my '79 242 GT alloys (similiar to what you describe); you can usually find the brushes in the baby supplies section at the supermarket. Get several, they wear out fast. The commercial wheel cleaner I've had the best luck with is the Penske brand (comes in a black plastic spray bottle) from K-mart, believe it or not. And once the wheels are clean, try waxing them with regular car wax. Are you using PBR brake pads? They're a lot "cleaner" than other pads I've tried.

Thanks Mike for your response.

How big is the brush on the "bottle brush"? I'll take a look.

A particular product name for the Pensky product? most mgfers have more than one product.

I did try paste wax, but still needed the toothbrush for the corners. Grrr

Haven't heard of PBR pads, maybe not available in Seattle or I don't know where to look. Traditionally I've had good luck with Bendix for long mileage and no squeal.

I'll see if they're available up here. I did see an ad for new, either Bendix or Wagner "reduced dust" pads......any knowledge of these. When I get the glaze sqeal I use the 4" rough grade auto body grinding discs to clean the pad faces and rotor. Better ideas?

You can get PBR pads from IPD or RPR.
