M46 - Frozen Fill Plug 200 86

O.K., now what do I do?

I have tried PB Blkaster and Propane, but still cannot get this plug to turn so I can refill the transmission.

The hex head is getting rounded off, though not completely yet.

Any ideas?

    Zee,

    That Honda fill plug was rounding off as well. I used the pipe wrench on the bolt head ... got the jaws locked on to the remaining sholders of the hex and broke it free. It chewed the bolt head up but once it got a bite the harder I torqued on it the stronger the jaws gripped the bolt. It may seem strange to use a plumbing tool for auto work ... but in this case I can't think of anything else on hand that would have done the job. It not only gained a lot of grip on a bad bolt head but at 18" the pipe wrench provided a great deal of leverage ... like a mini-breaker bar. I do hope you get this problem resolved through whatever means. Good Luck.

      tried this, but all it is doing is grinding off what remains of the hex head.

      there appears to be some whitish substance aroung the rim of the threads that are (barely exposed. I am beginning to think the PO used some plumber's cement in this thing.

      (I have found the pipe wrench indespensible for loosing the filler tube on an automatic transmission.)

    Zee,

    If you can get a large pipe wrench on it ... give it a try. Just had to break a transaxle fill plug loose on my son in laws Honda Civic. Nothing else but the plumbers tool would do it. Once it got a bite on the plug it just wouldn't let go. Must have taken 120 foot pounds to break it free! I replaced the chewed up, rounded off, SOB plug with new. I did put a bit of anti-seize compound on the threads so it shouldn't produce any extened periods of swearing and knuckle busting next time around. Good Luck.

      Jerry,

      Are you saying to put the pipe wrench onto the hex head, or the round plug, if any of extends out from the gear case at all?

      I fear this hex head is a gonner and it does not hold up to any grip or force before it rounds off.

      Little doubt I'll be replacing it once it is out.

    That plug is huge, it's a perfect target for a backout.

    just go to your local hardware store and buy a backout set.

    you'll use a drill (fast one) in reverse, since the threads on

    the backout are the same.. then you can just attach a wrench to

    the above mentioned backout and remove the plug.

    gee, do you think I could say the word "backout" any more?

    ... backout, backout, backout. (giggles)

    This is not the first time I have read this....one dude had to get the Dremel out...but first:

    1) Can you still get a wrench on it? If so, somehow hold the wrench on the haed then ping it with a ball pein hammer....ie smack the wrench to get some vibes going...this will help break the metal to metal "seal" from atom sharing....

    2) If a wrench is useless get the old vice grips out....and lock the thing on the head tigher than tight, then ping it, then put a piece of pipe on the screw handle of the vice (hehe) grips and lever away. Careful....

    3) Punt...sell the car...replace the tranny...or moto tool!

      I can get vise grips on it, but the head is so soft, is just is rounding off.

      Well, good plan, but the car is already sold! I agreed to fix it up in several areas, and I am running way behind. this ain't helping any.....

        Hi there,

        What I did recently in thsi situation is after draining the fluid, I filled the trans with approximately the correct amount of new fluid from the drain plug, sealing the hose from my hand pum with a rag. Remove thehose and install the plug in one fell swoop and you are done.

        OK pipe wrench......

        Or as I recall somebody ground two parallel flats just wide enough for a wrench of some size then levered it off and somebody else just ground down to the contact surface and then vice grips brought it out with ease...of course you'll need a new plug...but, er....you already knew that. Sorry, wish I was there....it's sort of a specialty of mine...usually fixing my own stupidity.
