Wheel Balance or what 900 1995

I don't want to trust trouble shooting to the caliber of people in some of the local reapir shops but with suspensions - I need help. I would like to have a little knowledge to tell them what to look at so......I have a vibration and at very low speeds, like crawling along in traffic, the steering wheel oscillates (rotates back and forth) slightly when the car is rolling forward. You guys with suspension know-how - Is this a wheel out of balance? Is it something else? It smooths out at high speeds but there is a subtle vibration at all times. Appreciate any ideas.

Everyone's suggestions seem to center on tires, but I had this problem with my 245, and rotating the tires didn't seem to help. You might need new wheel bearings or tie rod ends. I have replaced these parts and the problem went away almost completely, what remains I have traced to a slightly warped brake rotor which drags for a little while after applying brakes, then goes away. Good luck tracing the problem, it drove me crazy for a while.

/// There are two possibilities. Have you had a recent panic stop? If you have one of the tires on the front has slipped on the steel (or mag) wheel. In such situations one bead slips and the other doesn't torquing the tire on the wheel. The cure is to break down at least one side reair, rebalance the tire.

The other possibility is that you have a serious separation in the tire. This is not fixable. Replace the tire immediately.

You can jack the front tire, place a bottle with a bent wire pointing to the tread, rotate the tire and watch the track of the tread relative to the pointer you have made. If there is a separation the tire will move closer to the pointer at the point of separation.

A good tire store will have a radial runout gauge to check the tire for "out of round." That is what you would do with the bottle and wire.

I think the other posts have good ideas. Just to add another experience I would add that that is exactly the symptom the "Crapelli" tires on my wife's car caused when their belts shifted and the tires went out of shape. It may not be anything caused by an "incident".

Could be many things, from tire troubles (sidewall flex differences, flat spot in the tread, bubble in the tire) to a bent or unbalanced wheel. I would take it to a decent local tire shop and see what they say. One first step is to swap tires front to rear and note any differences, which will pin down whether it is tire or suspension related.

    Sir,

Most likley you (or someone ou loaned the car to) hit a curb with one of the front wheels. As the wheel spins it "wobbles". The faster you go the less noticable teh effect on the steering wheel.

Couple of ways to check... jack up the front wheels and spin them... you should see the "wobble" or, have someone drive the car (slowly) while you walk along and watch or, (if it has been going on for a while), look at the tread wear patern on your wheel

    good luck

    Evan
