died,won't start 700 1989

Thanks for the advice.Ran the codes from the little led light box under the hood codes 1 and 6(fuel and ignition,I think)and they both came up 1-1-1(supposedly this is OK?)There is no power at the fuel pump and all relays and fuses have been checked. After the car sits awhile it ALMOST starts for 1/2 a sec.By the way,the unit IS a 561 and we even plugged in a broken 561 for giggles and the same result-told us nothing, but hey we're lost.We also made sure the car has gas, etc.

    Re: died,won't start 700 1989

Ah, the 'popular' 561. Hopefully that's not the problem :|

Hey, at least you were able to pull the codes out of BOTH computers, so that is encouraging.

1-1-1 codes mean everything is 'normal' as far as the computers can tell. (Terminal #2 (#1 on yours?) is LH-Jetronic MFI, terminal #6 is the EZ-116 ignition.) Is it possible the codes might have been cleared out already? I'm not sure if the codes are stored in NVM and are still in there after the battery is disconnected or the 25A fuse is pulled. Be aware too that once certain codes are cleared they won't come back immediately, even if the original problem is still there.

    Riddle me this:

When you turn on the ignition, does at least one of the relays activate? (If you hold the relay PCB with the relays facing up and with the terminals facing away from you, the system relay is the one on the left and should activate continuously with the ignition on.) This is the first thing that has to happen (on the fuel side) in order for the engine to run.

If the answer is No, then:

    a) the computer is not getting power or has a bad ground. (The grounds for the LH are on the intake manifold under the bolts for the fuel rail - check those out.)

    b) the computer is not driving the relay (dead computer).

    c) the relay is defective (open winding, bad PCB/solder, etc).

Re: died, won't start, my response needs some support 700 1989

Just tossing this out. A car at my friends shop had a similar problem. It turned out to be some crank sensor??? can anyone help me with this??

If that sensor isn't indicating the crank turning, it turns off the injectors. Is That right guys??

That would explain your 'almost start' you have fumes in the cylinders to giggle at you but it's not getting any more fuel to start it.

Re: died, won't start, my response needs some support 700 1989

Yes, if the crank position sensor (behind the head over the flywheel) is NG the ignition computer can't determine the spark timing, therefore you won't get any spark.

And if you don't get any spark, the LH computer won't get the signal it needs from the ignition computer, and the LH comp won't turn on the injectors at all.

If Robb is getting spark when he cranks the engine, that will rule out any problem with the crank sensor.

/// Did you check the ignition switch? There may be no power to the fuel pump (after a short run up- several seconds )unless the engine is running.
