my power steering belt is shot, and the bently book does not go into great detail if at all about how to replace this belt. they mention special tools to remove the crankshaft pully. i am trying to keep the price down. can i get by with regular tools? thanks. will

I just happened to change mine today for my first time. For the power steering, you will definitely have to loosen the ac compressor. Besides the tension screw, there are 2 bolts on the ac and one on the power steering that must be loosened. Not to bad, really. I replaced the accessory bushings while I was in there. Mine were shot.

Very simple on my '89. 10mm socket for the tensioner and 12 or 13mm for the pivotting bolts. I think on mine, I have to loosen the AC compressor to do the power steering belt, eother way, if you can change a tire....you're in.

Unless you are replacing the timing belt (around 100,000 miles or 160,000km for a B230) there is no need to remove the crankshaft pulley.

However, if you are changing all your belts anyway, this is as good a time as any to change the timing belt as well. You shouldn't need special tools; the pulley itself is a hand press fit. If, however, it is seized onto the crank, you may have to resort to a puller of some sort, but I would think that is the rare case.

The center bolt is 24mm, at least on my '90 B230F. If you have a standard trans, life is easy. You just have to pull the hand brake, chock the wheels and put the trans in top gear to lock the crankshaft. If you have a slushbox, you will have to jam the flywheel somehow while someone else torques on the bolt.

Other than a few wrenches, you don't need any special tools. You don't have to remove the crank pulley unless you wnat to change the timing belt. You might need new bushings for the A/C, Alt and PS pump though. It's not that hard, just a little time consuming.

Huh? What bushings are you talking about? I have no idea what you are talking about. Did you use the wrong word? I've never seen any bushings on the A/C, Alt, or PS pump! What is their purpose?

Black cylindrical rubber things which keep the accessories in place on their mounts. I've got them. Take a closer look.

my goodness! who knew! looky see all those rubber thingies!

I've trained my brain well to ignore things i probably need to replace *someday*, but not right now, especially if it's too hot outside.... or too cold outside.... or too nice a day to be working on the car....

Are they supposed to decrease felt engine vibration, or protect the peripherials (accessories?) from the engine vibration?

The rubber bushings do both. Accessories need some compliance.
