air control valve 200 82

This 82 245 will crank, fire briefly, but not start. The air control valve does not meet specs when tested with a multi-tester.

Can a malfunctioning air control valve cause a no start condition such as this? Thanks for your help.

Matt

Re: air control valve 200 82

/// Check the ignition switch. All electrical switches have a life cycle. Given the year of your car the ignition switch is due. You can unplug the harness from the switch and short the positive position to the run position with a solid wire the same size as the pins on the switch. Then use a jumper to briefly short the start position to the first jumper. The car should crank and run if the switch was the problem. The harness plug is keyed so you can reinstall it blind. There are only two screws holding the switch on.

---Do not spray carb cleaner in any Volvo part unless you have absolute assurance ther are no plastic parts inside. I can't remember but some where I read that the auxillary air valve has plastic parts. Gas may be a safe solvent. I use Gas to clean injectors.

Re: air control valve 200 82

Not likely. The air control valve only controls idle speed. A stuck air valve would cause either a fast idle when warm (stuck open), or the engine would idle too slow or stall when cold (stuck closed).

In any event you should still be able to start the engine. In the worst case you might have to hold the throttle open slightly in order to keep it from stalling when cold, but it should start.

Sounds more like a massive air leak, whereby the engine fires entirely off the fuel from the cold start injector. Without proper air flow to lift the air plate, the main injectors won't squirt any additional fuel.

Re: air control valve 200 82

It seems that you checked it with an ohmmeter. I think that there are different types of air control valves. Be sure you have the correct specs for your model. Also try shaking it (the valve). If you feel that the rotating piston is moving, it'S not stuck but it can be. So, you can clean it with carb cleaner. You can open some type of valves but not all. If it's sealed, you will have to clean it by the exterior, shaking it until it moves inside.
