It just stops! 700 89

I cannot recreate this problem for my mechanic. He has checked for properly connected hoses, cleaned the "throttle body" and generally looked around, but didn't find anything out of order. I hope I can get some help here. The car has a T4, BTW. The turbo has only about 6k mi on it.

This has happened several times recently, but only twice to me. I think it is the same each time, though. I can't say for certain that this happens every time it is started from cold. Maybe not because the car sat out over night at the mechanic's before he even saw it. Maybe only after it sits???

- start the car.

- it runs fine - turbo seems to have the expected kick

- drive from 1/4 to nearly two miles

- it shuts down

- wait a few min.

- starts and runs fine

- as far as I know it only quits once.

Both times I experienced the problem the car had sat for 4-5 days before starting.

I have lightly browsed FAQ, but since I am really no mechanic I don't really know how to use them to good advantage.

Could be a bad relay. When my fuel pump relay started going, the car would die after 10-15 minz of driving. Let it sit for 10 more, it would start right up. Fuel pump relay & Radio noise suppression relays are the culprit in these cases.

Oh, and unless your not inclined, just resolder both relays. Cheap & fixes the probs and or future probs. Can't hurt!

        Elliot:

Could this be related to the AWFUL AM reception I experience?? If so, maybe we have something here. Thanx.

Possible, but unlikly. Despite its name, apparently it doesn't have that much to do with "noise" in the radio. (Something to do with getting rid of electrical whine feedback) Still worth a shot!

    Lee,

I'd definitely start by looking at the trouble codes. Retrieve them and let us know what you get.

    Cheers,

ignition amplifier module had to be replaced on my car.

    intermittent stops.

    it only gets worse.

when it turns into a complete no start, try chilling the ignition module with a freezer can (radio shack)...if it starts, the problem is an intermittent open in the ignition module.

Re: It just stops! 700 89

My favourite theory for this kind of failure: Ignition pick-up sensor, Hall effect sensor, engine speed sensor, crank position sensor, could be called any of these, could be in the distributor or just below it. What-ever or where-ever, it generates a signal at a specific crank position to fire the ignition. Check the 700/900 FAQ for details of where to look on your car. If this is it, it will not be too expensive to replace.

In my experience, bum relays cause no-starts but not cut-outs. They are cheap and easy to replace, though, so consider fuel pump and main injection relays as possible things to repair or replace.

Have you or the mechanic read back the fault codes?

Talked to mechanic today. There were NO codes. Thanks for the response.
