Difficult Starting 700 1990

Recently my 740 has been giving me problems when starting - hot or cold no difference. The sympom is that the RPMs are so low at startup that the engine simply dies. The work-around is that I pump the gas peddle ever so slighty at startup and then try to maintain the RPMs at about 1500 for about 15 seconds - then I can let up on the gas and the RPMs will hold at the normal 750 RPM idle as usual. I suspect a vaccum problem somewhere related to the fuel system, but upon inspection all hoses seem to be in the proper place and secure. Any help in troubleshooting the problem would be greatly appreciated.

It never hurts to give the throttle body a good cleaning when having any kind of idling problem- start up or otherwise.

Re: Difficult Starting 700 1990

You didn't specify the engine, so my advice is for a B230f.

An intake/hose leak will generally cause a high idle speed. You should look at the idle control motor. It's located under the intake manifold,

a hose come in from the intake and the other goes to the manifold. There's

a wire connector on one end. Sometimes you can tap it lightly when your having the problem and it will work. One way to test it is to disconnect

the connector to see if this will duplicate the problem.

Hope this gives you some help.

There is a vast amount of information in Steve Ringlee's FAQ and in the archives on this matter.
