16 VALVE TICKING AND POOR WARM IDLE 900 1991

MY CAR SEEMS TO HAVE A LIFTER THAT MAKES NOISE WHEN COLD. NOT IMMEDIATELY AT START UP. AFTER 5 MINUTES OF DRIVING, DISAPPEARS. ANY FIX AVAILABLE?

MY CAR ALSO IDLES POORLY OR NOT AT ALL AFTER DRIVING AND THEN RESTARTING WHEN WARM. IS THIS POSSIBLY AN IDLE CONTROL VALVE PROBLEM?

HOW CAN I GET ACCESS TO RECALLS OR SERVICE BULLETINS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON THIS CAR ? IT IS A 940 GLE 16VALVE STATION WAGON.

Re: 16 VALVE TICKING AND POOR WARM IDLE 900 1991

Joe: First off, please fix the LOCKED CAPS LOCK.

Re the recalls. Take your VIN and call the dealer service department,

they will be able to tell you if there are any outstanding recalls.

My 90/740 16 Valve had none when I checked recently.

For your idle have you checked the condition of the throttle body and the flame trap?

For lifter noise; what oil are you using? Synth? Weight/viscosity?

When did you first notice it? Anything happened recently before that?

Re: 16 VALVE TICKING AND POOR WARM IDLE 900 1991

i have used 10/30 oil over the the last 35000 miles that i have had the car

i have used conventional, synthetic and semi-synthetic oil. nothing unusual happened prior to the problem. once again, it seems to be one noisy lifter, not everyone. it does not make noise on initial startup only after a minute or two then lasts perhaps for 4 or 5 minutes of driving then disappears. i would say that over the last year the time it takes for the noise to disappear has increased. thanks for the tip on the idle problem.

Re: 16 VALVE TICKING AND POOR WARM IDLE 900 1991

I have a similar problem with my '91 16-valve. The engine is a used replacement (long story) which had a lot of varnish and lots of hydraulic lifter noise during warm-up. I believe the noise is caused by deposits around the lifter(s) and the differential thermal expansion during warm-up causes them to bind and stick. I often heard the noise cycling which I attribute to the lifter rotating through a sticky spot. After trying different oils, engine flushes, and additives with little success I have almost completely cured the problem with a steady use of Mobil 1 and CD-2 oil detergent. Only an occasional tick now and then when restarting after it has partly cooled down. My suggestion is to only use synthetic Mobil 1 or Amsoil (Castrol Syntec did not help at all), and add extra detergent till the problem goes away.
