H20 pump 200 1984

I have just recently had to replace my water pump. The old one was leaking coolant and also the bearings were shot which lead to a very noisey squeel in my belts. I had to put the new one on 4 seperate times due to the miss alignment of the heater tube. Well, anyhow I thought that i had it and now i have a slow leak at that particular point. If anyone has any pointers as how to apply the new water pump without leaking let me know. It would be most appreciative. It is a tricky one.

thanks

Re: H20 pump 200 1984

Apart form the pipe going in from the rear, there is also a connection and seal on the top connecting to the head. When I renewed a pump last I also renewed the head and I made sure the pump was placed first and in line with the block before I replaced the head. This ensured a proper pressure and seal on the top seal of the pump.

I guess if you just install a pump you must make sure there is sufficient upward pressure to get a tight seal on top of the pump, before you secure the nuts of the pump.

Re: H20 pump 200 1984

Here's my trick:

towards the back of the block, like under the #4 exhaust port, is a clamp that holds the hard coolant line to the block. Loosen/remove the clamp. It makes it much easier to manipulate the line for a correct fit.

Also, put the little seal in the pump and shove the line into it. Don't put the seal on the line and then press it in. A wee bit of lubricant on the seal will help ease things together.

Re: H20 pump 200 1984

Well first I would say "what brand of water pump are you installing?"

If it is the affordable GMB pump you may have a very rough finish to the

casting in that area. You should use some grit cloth or sandpaper and finish the surface of the area where the gasket seats. Another thing I use

is a lubricant like Dow 111 to treat the gasket and its sealing surface so

the seal is not going to stick or tear. Make sure when you insert the pipe

into the pump that the seal seats without getting sideways or getting

caught on the metal around the hole. Thats about it really.
