Oil vs. time. 200

Okay, here's the situation:

I'm about to put the ol' winter beater back on the road. It's seen <50 miles since last May. The oil was changed shortly before that.

Why are oil change requirements set to time or mileage? What cause oil to 'wear out' by just sitting in a crankcase?

Should I change the oil or not? Don't forget that I'm talking about a really rusty '85 245DL with amazingly low compression for a car that still runs. At 270k and almost no floors, should I even EVER bother to change the oil anymore?

Inquiring minds want to know.

With a stored car, I always go on the theory that you should change the oil on the way into storage, and shortly after getting out of storage. But if you want to save five bucks, well, why bother, especially if it is kind of a bucket.

My brother changed his oil once in the last year because it used to leak 1/2 quart a week, adn he doesn't drive very much. But now I fixed the seals for him and it looks like he's going to need an oil change.

I'm leaning toward Jason's answer. whether you use the car or it sits, the used oil in the crankcase is acidie AND moisture is absorbed in the oil due to condensation. But I wouldn't sweat it if you have 50 miles on the oil and if the ole'girl is just there to get you through the tough winter.

    Where are you located?

Your oil is fine. The time limit assumes regular driving: if you put low mileage, short trips on the car, the oil will load up with contaminants sooner than for highway trips. So you may not reach the minimum mileage but still need new oil.

    Re: Oil vs. time. 200

I think the time limit is set assuming normal usage, possibly in a city situation where mileage may be short but idle times are long.

Used oil, sitting in the crankcase can be somewhat acidic, and is better changed out.

But if you're running on low compression and no floors in a beater, you can probably just add oil as its burned and not worry about anything until it dies.
