looking at buying an 80' 242GT what to look for?? 200 79'

I have located an 80' 242GT are there any big concerns that i should keep my eyes open for when inspecting this car?

The current owner seems to be very hones and has told me up front about minor rust repairs in the bottoms of the doors and the spare tyre well has been replaced ( you show me a 200 with an original pair of rear wells!! I've never seen one!)

It was resprayed original one tone silver and the GT striping has been removed!

Do they have any "Must Checks" or are they pretty much the same as a 244/264?

it has a 2.3litre motor and 4spd with electric o/drive, a new clutch and factory 5 spoke wheels.

How much different are they on the road to a 242DL?

and what is average litres per 100km?

Thank you for any advice in advance!

Luke.

Re: looking at buying an 80' 242GT what to look for?? 200 79'

I've got a '79 and an '81 and the one real problem with them is that they are generally driven much harder than the "normal" 240s, so overall general wear rate is higher. Check for worn/broken suspension bushes, worn brake rotors, gearbox (hard shifting and/or noise in neutral with clutch engaged), proper overdrive function (should engage/disengage quickly and silently and ,provided the clutch is used when engaging/disengaging it, smoothly) and any other normal wear and tear items (heater fan motor for noise/proper function, coolant leaks in cabin from heater, smokey engine on startup and after periods of idling, vibrations from driveshaft, shock absorber function, etc. etc.)

They have much better handling than the standard models; higher grip levels, much less body roll, but slightly harsher ride (especially '80 on) due to slightly stiffer springing and much thicker sway bars. I love 'em!

Fuel consumption will vary a lot with driving style, engine condition, tyres, etc., but expect an average of about 11 litres/100 km or better for an equal mix of city/highway driving if the car is in good condition. Cheers

I had a 79 242gt. Check as much as you can but I suggest checking the status of the cooling system. I replaced a rad and two water pumps. It liked to burn water pumps. Also it had a nasty habit of breaking speedo cables.... bu bye cruise and guage. They were apparently a problem to install and there was some part confusion on this model I believe. I think most things fell into the realm of normal wear and tear otherwise. m2c
