Re: heater problem, brrrrrr 700 86

There is a temp sensor in the heater hose running from the engine to the firewall. It does not allow the fan to come on until the engine is warm, in any position other than defrost. Either the wire will be disconnected, the switch will be bad, or the ground wire from the sensor to body will be off. If it is the switch, you can bypass it by grounding the wire, which will allow the fan to run at any time.

I have an 87 760 turbo and had the same problem. The mechanic discinnected and bypassed a compression cylinder that had a leak and *shazam* HEAT! Pretty timely in mid November.

    Alan,

I have an '88 760. Does your '85 have any diagnostic codes?

In any case, check the connections to the ACC. With the engine OFF, unplug and plug in the control unit a couple times. I bet it hasn't been touched for the past 14 years and a connection may be a bit corroded. Be gentle, it is an expensive item to replace (but you already know that, don't you?).

The Volvo green manual, TP 8701201, is about $45. Like the OEM wiring diagram for everybody, the Climate Control manual will pay for itself many times over for ACC equipped cars the first repair you can do instead of paying for a Volvo tech.

I have to be away from home for a few days, but if you get no relief, e-mail me and I'll try and find more info from my copy after next Wednesday.
