Want to replace motor mounts. HELP!! 700 1989

I have alot of vibration inside the car so I think its time to replace the motor mounts. Anyone know if I have hydraulic or just the normal rubber ones on my 1989 740 GLE Wagon with 76k miles. I see that this year has both parts listed on IPD's web site. Is this a BIG job? I would like to do it myself but if the job is a bear I will shell out the $200.00 bucks to have it done. (thats if the mounts are not hydraulic. $400.00 if they are. OUCH!) Any advice would be great. I know I will need a floor jack or hoist. I can get it. Should I get the parts from Volvo or the heavy duty ones from IPD?

Thanks for the input,

Erik N

Re: Want to replace motor mounts. HELP!! 700 1989

Erik,

I just replaced the mounts on my 740 turbo wagon last tuesday. It is a piece of cake. I put the car on ramps, took off the lower cover/pan, removed the three nuts on the lower bracket then the top nut on the mount.

The engine was supported with a floor jack cusioned with some foam on the pan at the drain plug. After eveything was loose just raise it slowly until you can remove the mount. I used about 20" of extention to access the nuts from the top and a box wrench for the ones on the bottom. I did one side at a time. The side buried under the turbo was actually eaiser to do than the one out in the open!

Good luck

Hey, Erik, you have already gotten good advice from Mike. I would just add more in the same vein, since I replaced motor mounts a couple months ago. See what's available: the eBay price from RPR can't be beat (starts at $100), but call RPR to see what all they stock (aren't they ALL hydraulic?), and call IPD to get 10 seconds advice.

And, yeah, you either need a way to bully the engine from below or lift from above. Maybe get a friend to wrestle with you. See the archives of so many Volvo sites for the many ways (variations) people have gone about this.

For heaven's sake dismount as much junk from the front of the engine bay ASAP to get room to work. And belly pan. Use it as a chance to clean up, freshen grounds up forward, do any work on the lower forward part of the compartment.

OK? Good luck!

Gregg

From the IPD website, it looks like you should need a pair of hydraulic motor mounts. IPD part #WS1378657 is for the 700/900 B230F/FT '87-'95 (It says B23F/FT on the website, but I think it should say "230" instead. That's what their catalog says.) You may want to check out ebay item #491913448.

Good luck.
