coolant deteriorate timing belt? 200 92

In a classic "what was I thinking?" I pulled the hose on the thermostat housing off in order to drain the coolant and swap out the thermostat. Kids - don't try this at home. Use the lower hose like you are supposed to. Anyway, coolant gushed out and apparently forced itself into the timing cover and now 2 days later coolant is still seeping out of the cover.

Question: Will coolant cause premature failure of the timing belt? Seems like rubber (actually neoprene?) and coolant were meant to be happy together. Should I take the cover off and clean it out?

i believe i can say yes anti-freeze will ruin your timing belt.

my timing belt failed after only 8,000 miles only 4,500 miles after my radiator ruptured (broken belt to the waterpump at 115 mph) i didn't know to clean or replace the belt when i replaced the radiator. of course everybody told me i should have after the belt failed

contaminated coolant can deteriorate a lot of things. Acidic, dontchaknowit.

I would at least drill a small hole in the bottom of the lower timing belt cover for a drain.
