Steel sunroof seal replacement? 900

Hi all!
I have a 1994 940 with steel sunroof.

There is a mechanical issue that may prevent my restoring the very leaky sunroof (in Seattle!) to full usefulness.

But, I must do something. That something may have to be a new seal, with the roof propped up into place. Not doing just service to my old friend, but it is far beyond the duct tape fix I have seen on a few of this vintage.

So, I have a good quality OEM outer seal from IPD and am ready to launch into this one.

It all looks simple enough, and hey, what could go wrong?

So many times, so many projects, have been needlessly lengthened by uttering those few words!

Any pointers? Anything - please ...

yenna

It's been too many years since I've replaced sunroof seals so I doubt I can give you useful advice---except--you mention having the seal--and my question is--do you have both the seal that goes around 3 sides of the sunroof panel?--and--the one that mounts to the rear opening in the roof? -- Dave

Also, verify the four drain tubes, clear vynil, are clear. If your 940 sites under Pac NW trees, and the seal has failed or is gone, detritus can accumalate quickly, clogging the drain tubes.

One more suggestion for clearing the sunroof drains. If you know someone who has an air compressor, the drains can be safely blown out using the correct size attachment to fit in the top of the drain tube. Perhaps you know a mechanic or have a mechanically inclined friend??

For the rear drains in the far corners of the sunroof tray you often need to loosen the caked debris with a long piece of coat hanger wire. Blowing into the drains risks something jamming in the vinyl tubing down at a pinch or bend. Suctioning the loose debris with a long piece of vinyl tubing taped to a vacuum nozzle works well and you can see what you're doing with the sunroof partially open and a good flashlight. An alternative is compressed air back up the drain hoses which end just above the fender drain slits. In sedans you can also access the drain hoses in the corners of the trunk where they join the rear window vent drain tray window hoses. In wagons there's no rear window drain so no point in removing the side panels.

Some good suggestions. Except for the very top or bottom of the drain tube I would never use a coat hanger or wire! I have heard of people puncturing or damaging the drain tube by trying to stuff it in as far as possible.

Thanks for the kind words, Kitty. If the sunroof seal has separated or is damaged then that's an issue I haven't had to deal with. People think the sunroofs are supposed to be a water tight seal, but that's simply not the case. First thing is to ask if the panel at the rear lifts up flush to the roof when fully closed. If not then there's a loose nut on the side rails that needs to be tightened. If water is a problem then all four corner drains of the sunroof tray pan need to be inspected and cleared. Like you say, here in the Pacific Northwest it doesn't take much for a wad of pine needles or whatever to block a far corner of the tray. Lots of info here and elsewhere can be found on inspecting and clearing the drains.

        Dear Kittysgreyvolvo,

Hope you're well and stay so. I cannot help with sunroof issues. I never thought a sunroof was a good idea, so have never owned any car so equipped.

That said, to clear the drain tubes, I'd use a piece of soft steel wire, and bend one end to double it - about 1/4" (6.5mm) - so that the tip is rounded. Use a file to remove any sharp or rough edges. The tip should be as smooth as possible. That reduces the risk of punching a hole in the plastic tubing.

I've used this device to clear blockages in the air-conditioning system drain tube (that protrudes slightly from the firewall, just below the aluminum air-conditioning evaporator/drier canister).

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
