Where does my owner's manual stow in my 1995 945? 900

I generally appreciate the size of the glovebox on my A/C and airbag equipped 940 wagon. Big enough, but not so big that I'm tempted to overstuff, and random crap ends up living there in perpetuity. The only negative is that it's not deep enough for my owner's manual packet. Obviously there's a dearth of space under the luggage area floor, and that's where I've been keeping it. I'm just wondering if the clever folks had a specific home in mind for this.

I've long had the same peeve as you. Our vehicle registrations and insurance certificates here are the same size as the owner manual, maintenace manual and radio manual. I keep these all together in their plastic pouches in the glovebox the way the Volvo gods intended. Everything was fine in the 700s until passenger side airbags came along. They had to make room for the airbag above and didn't bother to redesign the right side defrost tube or the dash cross member brace to accomodate a better glove box. They could have made one steeper and deeper at the lower back if they wanted to. Marketing obviously didn't get the memo and didn't change the manual size. If you keep it all to the left and have a bit of stuff below at the front, it will tip the manuals up enough to close. The 240s had a slightly more generous glovebox to start with. I'm not sure how much they had to change them for passengeer side airbags, presuming they got them in the final model years.

EDIT: Since my post, I've noticed that the individual booklets indeed fit just right in the left side of the glovebox. It's as though they designed the compartment exactly for the books, not accounting for any sleeve or whatever. Since I only refer to the owner's manual, I may leave just that in there, and the rest of the documentation in the blue vinyl pouch in the boot as I've been doing.

Nevertheless, I'm curious to know what other owners are doing :-)

      Dear Allrounderco,

Hope you're well and stay so. I stow manuals (in a Volvo-supplied vinyl case) in the driver's side door pocket.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

        Hello, Spook,
This is a good suggestion, and one I'd thought to try initially. The packet seemed to stretch the pocket a bit as I slid it in, and having heard lore of how easily the interior plastic can break, so I decided against that. Rethinking this 11 months later, though, I realized most of what's in that packet is totally irrelevant, so I removed a lot of the booklets, and now the packet fits in there without stressing the pocket. Gems such as "Consumer Rights Information," "Warranty Information," "Dealer Directory, March 1994," Volvo On Call," "Michelin Tire warranty," and the "Technical Literature Catalog, Oct. 1994" are now sealed in a zip lock, and stowed in trunk.

It was the 240s that had the very breakable front door plastic pockets, especially the tan ones. The 700/900 ones are much more solid and can take maps wedged in and the odd accidental kick with a boot. The elastic in the pockets behind the seat will sag if you keep anything fat there, especially the leather seat vinyl pockets, not so much the cloth seats. The wheel well storage recesses in the rear are good for storing such stuff and keeping it in original condition only if they're well sealed in zip lock plastic bags and maybe a cardboard re-inforcer so they don't take on a curved set.

Good to know my interior is sturdy. I don't want to be too fussy about my car, but it's nice, and I would like to keep it that way.

My (cloth) seat back pockets are indeed sagging. I'm surprised I've let them go in that state for almost a year. I have some elastic, and will give a shot at rejuvinating them. I also need to clean and regrease the fore/aft tracks. Trying to do that with the seats in place failed. Tomorrow or next week, I expect I'll pull the seats and address the tracks and the pockets. Then the interior will be very nearly perfect. Other than the constant smudges my kids adorn it with....

I do like those deep wheel well cubbies. I haven't decided what should go there (mainly because I'm afraid I'll forget). Probably extra tools and spare parts--sealed, as you say. Yeah, the extra lit can go there as well. I'll never need it, but like that the original owner kept it. I don't have a window sticker, but do have a little hanging "quick start" guidebook that probably hung from the radio knob on the showroom floor.
