HOOD RELEASE CABLE INSTRUCTIONS 200

Am about to replace the hood cable on a 1980 - 245. Would appreciate some help. How is the handle fastened to the firewall and where is it routed - any pics appreciated. Looks technically easy but messy.
Thanks

I just did this for my '81.
DO NOT MESS WITH THE CABLE MOUNTS!

First remove the front grill and using a hand mirror and light look under the hood latch. You should see a steel wire coming out of the end of the cable and connecting to the latch. The wire is probably rusted through near the latch.

If so, you can buy just the wire with a new handle. Just pull the old wire and handle out, insert the new wire and handle, and reattach to the latch.

    HOOD RELEASE CABLE INSTRUCTIONS 200

I took a look at my recently retired 1980 245 hood release cable. At the handle end the conduit is rigid and just pokes through a grommet in the firewall. In the engine compartment you can't see where it comes through because it's hidden within the "shock tower" extension that runs back to the firewall. There's a void just to the side of the brake booster where a multi wire harness emerges and wraps around the booster. The release cable is hidden by that harness. The cable extends forward under the strut tower and where it emerges it is held down by a small cable clamp. Near the battery, it--and a wire harness--are held down by a larger clamp. Then the cable turns and enters the radiator support and is held by a final clamp before attaching to the hood release. If you are on Long Island you're welcome to come and take a look. - Dave

Thanks for the details - so the cable is in the wheel well I guess which means removing the plastic wheel liner to get access. What is the best way to do this and reinstall it so it's secure.
Appreciate the detailed instructions you provided.
Long Island is a tad far from - I am in Canada near Lake Erie. LOL

NO--You've got that wrong--the job has nothing to do with the wheel well insert. Open your hood--follow along the top of the fender line from the front to the rear--as you approach the shock tower you'll see there's an opening where the top of the tower extends to the edge of the fender well--that's where the release cable and a heavy wire harness emerge from the gap formed by the upper "bridge" and the inner fender wheel--now look down just to the left side (driver's side) of the brake booster--you'll see a gap with a heavy wire harness emerging and wrapping around the booster--it's inside that gap where the cable goes through the firewall (you can't see it directly). From below the dash you can see where the cable goes through--just to the left of the black firewall insert panel. I know it's confusing - I hope my description is understandable. -- Dave

I did it - your instructions helped - took about and hour - very easy in fact.
          Thanks
