    original seat covers question 200

    Hi

I’m not to well informed about this subject but I was thinking there is a height difference of the rear portion. Like Art said the bottoms cushion stays the same.
The Wagonmeister Volvo refurbisher site sells cushions on the side so he might make references to what years they fit there.

I have a 78 and an 84 models. Beware that Volvo makes ever so slight changes and mid stream as all car manufacturers do!
The 1978 has the push button release but not the 1984 model as it cranks like all other models made forward. I have never seen a 1983 to know what you have.

Somewhere I think I noticed that the 1984 back was shorter in overall height than the 1986 wagon seat by about two inches. I believe the 1978 was the same height as the 1984 despite holding devices.
I noticed this by just looking at the window rail heights in relation to the seat backs tops from car to car.
But now, it’s also a wagon with a Naugahyde fabric with padded fabric backing/stitching as a filler. Somewhat different quality procedure over a cloth cover or even leather offerings.

I’m not where my 1984 is, so, I cannot just go out and look at these to compare. Sorry.

So with that I’m thinking the push button release to the crank seats it was by 1986 there was this two inch change.up higher. The head rests change shapes too through all of this too.
So you may have some other minor things going on that are hard to see right off with those covers ‘90 covers fitting the on the 1983.

I hope I’m confused but I wanted you to check it out and set me straight. If I’m right you might not see it until you pull one over the it and then see the extra length.
I also don’t know if the foams shapes moved around any.

This could turn into a rather informative thread from all the seats in Volvos right down to seat rails underneath.

Phil EDIT … I just posted and I see I’m not the only one. I feel relieved.(:-)

You may be right about the height difference of the seat backs from the earlier to the later 240's. Now that I push a bit more back through the fogy memory of years past, I may have actually transferred the seat back tilt lock mechanism to the later, taller seat back, keeping the 2-door functionality.

I was younger and more ambitious back then, and parts were much more available at the local pick-n-pull.

    Hi Byron,

I believe that the covers for the seat back from any 240 will also work on your '83 242. I have a 1980 242, and when they were still available in nice shape, I used to take the covers from any 240 in the pick-n-pull and swap them over to the 2-door seats. The only modification necessary was to cut an appropriate slot for the back release mechanism in the upper outside portion of seat back.

Hope I am remembering correctly, but am fairly sure I am.

    Mike

Hi Mike, I defer to your experience. I have an 83 242 but the original velour seat skins are in good shape, so I haven't tried to retrofit with skins from 4- or 5-door 240s. I assume those you were able to use were from pre-86?

        Hi Art,

Don't remember if they were from pre-86 or not. Now that you mention that, it rings a dim, distant bell that maybe the seat backs in later models were a bit different - taller perhaps ? Really don't recall, but just remember that the only real mod I made from 4-5 door seats to my 242 was the cutout for the seat back release lever. Was a real easy swap.

        Mike

I think the butt part will work, but not the back -- even if it were not the 242 but a 244 or 245 from '83. The two-door seat folds forward.
