144 speedo cable

I gather that I can't use the existing BW35 automatic trans speedo cable with my new conversion to a plain old M40 4 speed gear box.
Thanks, Duck

144 speedo cable

I think the BW35 cable is a little longer than the M40 cable and if it is, it can be connected as they share the same thread size connection at the transmission.

P.S. It would help to know the year of your 140.

Volvo did make mid-year changes and in those cases it helps to have the VIN as well.

144 speedo cable 140-160 1967

Eric, Thanks for the prompt response.

The car is a 1967 144S that came with a BW35 automatic trans.... yuck ! I have installed a M40 4 speed from a '68 or '69 142 that i chopped up some years ago.

Yes, the internal cable within the sheath seems to be long. So the threads of the cable don't reach the M40 speedo housing.
Can I trim the automatic cable or just purchase a new 670506?

Thanks Duck

I'm a bit confused.

According to the Volvo parts manual for an early 140, the BW35 cable is 1665mm and the M40 cable is shorter at 1580mm.

The threads are the same at the transmission for both transmissions and in fact the part that speedometer cable screws onto has the same part number.

So the BW35 cable should screw right on.

Trying to shorten the cable is problematic if you don't have the tools or supplies to do it right. Our speedometer repair shop can do it, but it costs more than to buy a new speedometer cable.

Eric,
Yes, this is what I came up with me looking in a old RPR catalog for reference.
The only thing like I said before is that the inner cable seems a bit long but I will try to place it in there again. It's only 30 F and snowing at the moment here in northern Wisconsin. Lovely weather for October !

Here's the VIN for the 1967 144S 1443461-028577
