PV544 Dieseling run-on problem 444-544

My 1962 PV544 with B20 engine diesels all the time (won't shut off). What steps would you recommend I take to stop this problem?

As for octane, I use Sunoco 260 in all my engines - took my snow blower out a couple of weeks ago - started up with 2 pulls! Using last winters gas.

With high test, I have never used fuel conditioner with my engines.

Try enriching your carbs 4 or 5 notches - then check your plugs for soot.

When I bought my '64 544, the seller told me he had enriched the carbs 5 notches - I drove home 30 miles and checked the plugs - the insulators were sooted - I adjusted back the five notches and the plugs have been clean ever since.

When Beetkebomb has been fully warmed and driven for a while, I do get an occasional stumble that, in my experience indicates a bit rich, but I would rather have that instead of lean.

BTW she has run better the more I drive her.

What's "Fuel Conditioner" ?

With HS6 SU's use KD or KN needles, stock springs & ATF. Also, use the large air cleaners as seen on B18B 140's.

Check that the advance/retard weights are returning to their stops with a snap. If stuck the engine stays too far advanced when you come back to idle. Check timing and retard it a couple of degrees from the book setting. What octane gas are you using? These engines like as high an octane as you can get. Super premium or better. You can use an octane booster.

You might also be running a bit lean. That keeps things too hot and accentuates the problem.

In addition to the ideas mentioned, simply having the idle set too high can cause it to run on.

If it is otherwise running OK, just leave the tyranny in gaer and slip the clutch a little as you turn off the key. Problem solved.

4th gear is perfect for that trick.

The best fix is some work in the combustion chamber & a K cam.
