As for octane, I use Sunoco 260 in all my engines - took my snow blower out a couple of weeks ago - started up with 2 pulls! Using last winters gas.
With high test, I have never used fuel conditioner with my engines.
Try enriching your carbs 4 or 5 notches - then check your plugs for soot.
When I bought my '64 544, the seller told me he had enriched the carbs 5 notches - I drove home 30 miles and checked the plugs - the insulators were sooted - I adjusted back the five notches and the plugs have been clean ever since.
When Beetkebomb has been fully warmed and driven for a while, I do get an occasional stumble that, in my experience indicates a bit rich, but I would rather have that instead of lean.
BTW she has run better the more I drive her.
