Yellow wire to instrument cluster, and turn signal issue 200 1990

My 1990 5-speed has some electrical gremlins. The key switch seems to have a spring return issue that requires some manipulation to get some accessory functions like windows and turn signals, whereas you normally should have to only let go of the key after starting the car. I swapped out the switch ( with a used 1990 switch ) thinking this was the issue. After removal, the removed switch seemed to have the same spring tension as the "new/old switch) I guess the actual key switch is what is interfearing with the normal key location function. At this time, I also replaced the speedo with one I had in my spare parts, due to no odometer function. Now, odo works, but turn indicators in cluster do not. The exterior turn signals are working.
Also I do not know where the yellow wire goes on the cluster.
1. Is this the cruise control, and does it go to the double spade with the piece of hose protecting the terminals?
2. Is it foolish to replace a 22 year old switch with a 22 year old switch?

Burco,

Did you resolve your two questions from a year ago?

The mechanical ignition lock provides detente for key position and returns the spring tension to return to the engine on position after turning to start the engine. The electrical ignition switch has a detente to isolate the key position for each of the positions the switch can land in including the temporary engine start position. KP 0 - III I guess? Unsure now.

1. Yellow wire to connect to the cluster is the car speed sensor signal out to the cruise control; the two spade connector with the rubber hose section to provide some short or unwanted electrical connection.

2. The ignition electrical switch at the backside of the lock. Maybe if the donor came from a 240 with lower miles or fewer turns or the operator did not use some huge giant and heavy key chain, yet a heavy key chain wears the key lock first an as it wear cause electrical switch wear.

Hope that helps.

Yellow wire to instrument cluster, and turn signal issue 200 1990

Burco,

I did resolve my issue from a year ago. ( Forgot how though )
But where exactly does that yellow wire connect to the cluster?
(My cruise does not work )
That wiring diagram site is a big help.
I am laughing at getting a response after a year.
It sounds like something I myself would do.

Thanks for the help. Merry Christmas.

Hi Mr. Burco,

Glad to halps! I may be a little confused here.

Dave Barton's site has a diagram of the back of the 1990 240 instrument cluster here (copy and paste into new open browser tab or window):

Read Dave's page yet here is the image:

Withe gratitude to Mr. Barton.

You do not want to connect the ignition coil (RPM) to the speedometer signal out as some do. The ignition coil signal spade is red / white stripe and that goes to the RPM sensor. There may be posts here where some have confused the ignition could wire and connected it to the two spade vehicle speedo sensor.

I was worried I got wire color confused.

The speedometer signal out is the dual blade copper alloy connector that has the section of rubber hose from the factory. The Volvo speed sensor in the rear differential signal comes to the speedometer connector through that funny T-shaped connector where we've probably all lost the white plastic retainer clip. Our beloved Art has a page on his cleanflametrap.com site that helps as the connector can be fussy with age:

https://cleanflametrap.com/speedoDiag.html

The last image of one of the speedo connector wire clips you gently squeeze for a good connection.

Hope this helps with the turn signal issue also.

A belated god jul (Happy Christmas or Happy Yule) and a Happier New Year!!!!

Hope that helps

Eggnog no moar so back to buttermilk, boyeeeeeee!!!
