So I did a smoke test for vacuum leaks and it was coming out quickly from the spring side of the throttle body shaft. I suppose the seal is bad. I see where you can order it, it is a rubber donut seal. Has anyone ever done this? I don't want to mess up anything taking that apart. I appreciate your help.

For the shaft seal (item #21) you could use the valve husher/absorber rubber to replace the old. It fits the shaft really well. I put suitably-sized leftover AC O-rings after it to make item#26 press it gently further onto the throttle body thus securing the seal. Use minimal grease to lubricate the seal during installation. You just undo the 13mm nut (item #28) to take old seal out and put new one in. Careful not to lose the spring and other items. Can be done with throttle body still in place.

It's not bad at all to replace. Biggest thing when replacing is just setting up the TPS switch for base idle when you're done.

When I did mine I also replaced the paper gasket (can't remember the name but not the triangle one that connects the TB to the intake manifold). This gasket was fine in my case and was maybe $5 or $10 for genuine.

[thought I remembered the PN being the same as valve hushers but that may only apply to turbo models?]

Thanks, I will give it a go. Not sure how much it will make a difference but it was definitely letting the smoke through when I tested it. I later discovered that the Intake Manifold gasket has failed on Cyl 1 at the bottom. It is sticking out. Strange.

Maybe someone had the intake manifold pulled out to get at something like the ECT and the gasket got accidentally dislodged or torn. I’ve never replaced that shaft seal, but now you’ve got me curious and will be checking the next time I have throttle bodies off for cleaning. Good post
