B16 or B18? 444-544 1962

Am looking to possibly buy a '62 544. The owner states it has a B18 but I see the oil filler cap is in the center of the valve cover and it has a canister type oil filter. I thought those were for the B16. Were there exceptions? Thanks.

Cal

Early B18 had the filler cap in the middle so that the chain for the radiator blind could move without disturbance. When the blind was deleted, the cap moved forward.

There are many visual differences between the two. The B16 has ribs in the rather squarer rocker cover. The B18 one is smooth. Not instantly obvious but the B16 is 6 volt. As Eric says the B16 starter is on the exhaust side. 1962 should be B18.

Where's the starter motor, on the drivers side below the distributor or on the passenger side under the exhaust?
