REMOVING SPEEDO CLUSTER - 1980 245 200 1980

Trying to remove my speedo cluster to replace O/D and Choke bulbs. Have removed bottom 2 bolts - but how do I pry or pull it out - please and thanks. I reached behind and tried to push up and out but no luck.

In Art's photo, you can see the 2 metal clips that hold the upper part of the cluster in. Also along the top back are black protrusions (7?) which are bulbs. That is, the bulbs are inserted into the circuit board and get their power from there rather than from wires.

I'm not comfortable using a screwdriver to pry the cluster forward from the top front. Rather I get on my back, reach up and push firmly at the top back, one side at a time, to dislodge the cluster. A putty knife might help from the front.

    Don't remove the cluster 200 1980

You shouldn't have to remove the cluster just to replace those two bulbs. They are easily accessible with the cluster in place.

I guess you're in Canada? Because of the choke, I mean.

    REMOVING SPEEDO CLUSTER - 1980 245 200 1980

This will sound brutal but I've removed many early 240 clusters and never did any damage. After removing the lower screws you need to pry the cluster free from the couple (or three) of spring steel "clips" that keep it in he dash on top. The "clips" are shaped like an upside down V and when the cluster is being installed you need to push hard to get it to snap into place -- removing it needs equal oomph. I use a sturdy screwdriver inserted between the top of the cluster and the bottom of the dash "hood". Push the handle towards the windshield levering the cluster down and out. I'd disconnect the speedo cable first. If the cable has never been off before it will have a black plastic anti-tamper "cage" surrounding the cable end fitting. Use a screwdriver to break the "cage" and then the cable end cap needs a 1/4 turn counter-clockwise to disengage it from the cluster. If you would like a tachometer to replace the center Volvo emblem now is the time to do it. The cluster is already wired for + and - you just need a feed from the coil (-) to the back of the tach. I have tachs if interested. Installation is the reverse--insert the bottom first and rotate the top to snap it in. Another thing I do -- the dash is lit by three bulbs mounted just above the cluster and shines through a blue plastic screen -- never enough light for me. I drill a few holes in the screen to let more light through.

Thanks Art - since the 2 bulbs are out side by side - is it possible that a just connection has slipped of?

        Where do I look ?

Heater core was recently replaced so thinking something may have been disturbed.
