Screeching on start up

1992 745 243K

My son's wagon just started this in the past week.

The car starts quickly but as soon as it does there is a very loud screech that lasts less than a second. It is similar too but louder than a slipping drive belt.

I assume it is the starter pinion hanging up and being spun at high speed by the flywheel before it disengages. I guess I am looking for a second opinion or verification.

I assume the fix is to replace the starter? Do you think lubing the pinion might be a reasonable attempt at a cheap fix?

Disconnecting the coil and cranking the engine eliminates the screech.

Thanks!

    Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

The belts were snug, the alternator was sound and the harmonic balancer was not slipping. It was in fact the starter.

I had a spare on the shelf and swapped it yesterday. Unfortunately the attachment point for the positive cable was extremely tight. When I tried to remove it the plastic broke away. That spoiled my plan to make an effort at cleaning it up internally and perhaps lubing it up for a spare.

This happened to my wife's 960 some years back. The most god-awful scraping/screeching sound you can imagine on startup, intermittently at first. Sometimes it would stop after a few seconds. Eventually, it happened more frequently and for longer duration. I ended up replacing the starter, but cleaning and lubing the pinion might work. On the 960, replacing the starter is much harder than on a 240/740 so I just wanted to do it once.

I'd give the alternator belt(s) a small squirt of WD40 or equivalent to be sure it's not the belt before removing the starter. If you find it is the starter you can lube the shaft and then "bench test" it off the motor. I have a few starters (cheap) on the shelf if you are local (Long Island) - Dave
