Question - fuel pickup length in tank. 120-130

Hello everyone,

I am working on my stock 122 fuel tank, and am fixing the brass pickup tube. Question is how close to the bottom of the tank should I locate the end of the pickup tube? Another way to ask, how much gas should be in the tank before it starts sucking air?

Any thoughts?

    Question - fuel pickup length in tank. 120-130

    Jim;

    I've been thinking about this and was going to say something along the lines of what Eric said...but then I thought about it a bit more and said to myself...if you are going to make and install a new pick-up tube, you are going to have it in your hands anyway, so if the reason not to contact tube to tank bottom is not to block flow into a squared off tube, then why not make it even simpler and make it so the tube CAN be close, but it wouldn't even be a problem if it was in contact with the bottom, because it is profiled, so even contact wont block fuel flow, and you can get every last bit on the bottom...this is what I meant:

    Cheers

    PS. Please document inside of Tank and your work with some pix...I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in having a close look!

      I like your idea Ron. I was about to say cut the tube on an angle so it could rest on the bottom, but your idea is better. Kind of acts like a filter for large rust particles and other stuff. Tom

        Question - fuel pickup length in tank. 120-130

        Tom;

        I agree, it would act as a pre-filter...but along with any filter would come the possibility for it to be clogged by debris, so just make sure the cross-sectional area of crenelations is at the very least equal to inner cross-section of tube...and thinking about it even more, would it be possible to route it to somewhere under Sender Hole (but NOT fouling Sender!), so that inspection and possible cleaning were options?

        Cheers

          And to go a step further (I’m about to get ridiculous), modify a tea ball with the long handles that fits over the end of the pick up tube and can be removed via said float hole.

            And I would have to add my two cents to this interesting thread to wonder aloud why anyone would anticipate treating an antique (assume steel fuel tank) with such poor respect as to want to use the very last gallon of sludge left in the tank. Keep it full if not on a cross-country trip, and if on such a trip, stop to buy fuel before you get to the last gallon. No modifications to the original concept needed.

    The pick up tube should be as close to the bottom as possible without touching the bottom.

      Question - fuel pickup length in tank. 120-130

      Hello everyone,

      Thank you for your advice. I ended up making the pickup about 1/8 from the bottom of the tank. It now basically drains the whole tank. I'll add some pictures to show what the tube looks like.
