Hello,
We rebuild 3-4 Volvo B18/B20 engines every year. Most of the time we install them, but on occasion we ship them.
Right now we're in the middle of building a B18 and a B20.
It is not cheap to do a thorough rebuild. We charge $3000.00 for a basic stock rebuilt B18 or B20 and below is a list of parts and operations that are done during 1 of our normal engine rebuilds.
Crack check block, cylinder head & crankshaft
Check main journals for straightness
Bore & hone engine
Surface cylinder head & block deck
Replace cam bearings
Turn crankshaft, polish rear main seal surface or install repair sleeve
Replace wrist pin bushings
Ck rods for straightness & resize big end
Weight match rod & piston assemblies
New rod nuts
Balance rotating assembly
Rebuild cylinder head w/unleaded conversion with new exhaust seats
New valves, valve guides & valve springs
New piston set w/new wrist pins & rings(Mahle if possible)
New main, rod & cam bearings
New wrist pin bushings
New camshaft(D) & lifter set
New steel timing gear set
Front & rear neoprene crankshaft seal conversion
New oil pump w/reinforcing ring
Rebuilt rocker shaft assembly
New water pump & thermostat
New freeze/core plugs, cam plug & oil galley plugs
New engine gaskets
Assemble engine & check all clearances
Oil filter
Engine bolt kit, Does not include head bolts

Looks great except,
1: B18 conrods, bin them and upgrade to the early B20 rods, direct swap.
2: D cam is pointless, it flogs the the valvetrain hard without having any meaningful useage (Other than ITB) With stock springs I would use a K cam, much kinder. B20B/E/F +4° advanced, B20A +8° advanced with intake lash loosened up to .022". With high compression a K on the inlet combined with a longer duration exhaust lobe will give a bit more everywhere on an injected or twin SU car. A3 Cosworth profile works great with the stock springs.
Other stuff: I put a regular O-ring behind the stock O-rings on the oil pump pipe to prevent a cold start pop out. Upgrade to flywheel bolts & and use hardend washers under the flywheel & head bolts. It is worth a cut across the top of the head (while the valve guides are out) if you are going up to hardened washers.

Eric, Sounds like a very complete job. Is $3,000 the price to buy the B18 you are building. The engine i have has a bad block, otherwise complete. Thanks, Steve Sent from my iPhone

Hello,
$3000.00 covers the rebuilding of the engine and a core engine is not included.
If you need a core engine, we charge $250.00 for a complete rebuildable engine.
FYI, the last engine we shipped was sent to New Hampshire and it cost $300.00 for shipping and crating.

What rings do you use?
What rod nuts do you use?
I hope you stopped using the D cam.

If we can find NOS Mahle B18 pistons, we use the rings that come with the pistons, but the Mahle B18 pistons are really hard to find nowadays. I still don't understand why Mahle doesn't make them anymore as they still make pistons for the early B20 engines with 6 bolt cranks.
So with the lack of Mahle B18 pistons, we've turned to VP and they have pistons custom made and supply Grant or Hastings rings. And unfortunately, we've had issues with some of the rings not being the correct size and in both cases some of the rings had ring gaps that were to big and out of spec so we had to get them replaced.
We use Dorman connecting rod nuts for the 6 bolt rods and OE Volvo nuts for the 8 bolt rods.
And yes we still use and prefer D cams in all stock B18 and B20 engines except for K-jet(CIS) equipped engines which get a K cam.
We have not experienced a pattern of unusual or premature wear on our customers cars in the last 20+ years. I attribute this to using high quality parts and using oil with sufficient ZZDP.
The D cams we use and sell are custom made for us and we use high quality lifters from AE or from Isky.
We have copies of D cams made because back in the late 1990's,Federal/Mogul bought the TRW valve train division in Europe, the only source of high quality aftermarket B18/B20/B30 valve train parts, and shut them down and because the white box cams we were getting weren't made correctly.
We are currently building an engine for a B18 to B20 swap for another shop and in this case the owner of the 1967 1800S has requested a larger cam and we settled on a Isky VV71 instead of a D cam.

Thank you. This sounds like a good alternative. Would need to have a core engine. My block shows GAG 418201 and Volvo 496 B18 as identification. Only parts I know that are bad at this point with current engine are the block and internals that you cover with rebuild. Car was running 2 years ago, before rod thrown. What is the best phone number to contact you. Appreciate the shipping info. I am in Houston Texas area. Do you have other parts for 122S B18 2 dr. or know of sources in CA? Thanks again, Steve Nordlander
