Dear GAcyclops,
Hope you're well. My 940s have only black tail-light bulb-holders. In salvage yard 940s or 960s, I can't recall having seen a white bulb-holder.
Anent dealing with corrosion, use an aerosol corrosion-remover - e.g., Deoxit - to get rid of corrosion in places difficult-of-acess, e.g., inside bulb-holders and on the insides of wiring harness female connectors. Fine steel wool suffices to remove corrosion on exposed surfaces.
While you can track-down the ground fault via a wire-by-wire process, that's time consuming. Removing the tail ligher clusters and cleaning all contacts is likely to solve the problem and will take about 30 minutes per cluster. Further, if one wire connector or bulb-holder has a corrosion layer that disrupts proper grounding, it is a safe bet that others are likely to create problmes.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
