the old dome(interior) light switch trick 200 1992

hi sages(po or rich and powerful)- 245 is on the verge of turning old and cranky with small ailments and 1F jobs. cant get dome light to switch on with the ceiling switch. switch has 3 positions: full off, door only and manual switch on for reading bently while sitting on a dark and rainy night on tobacco rd. door light goes on when door is opened. full off works. but 3d position of switch does not turn the light on which it used to. figure bulb is ok or door switch position wouldn't light it. also isn't door switch a separate circuit? bently and Haynes no help. looked in owners manual manual and it says to pull down switch assembly insert small flat screwdriver in little slot on left side of plastic cover lens and push in retainer latch and pull down assembly for inspection (wear, cockroachs, bullet holes etc.) . wondering if im missing something or if late 240s eliminated the full on circuit.. would appreciate a pearl of wisdom from my sage bruthas. thanks tons oldduke

You're right. The trouble is right there in the lamp assembly at the switch or the way it makes a ground to the roof. Pull down switch assembly insert small flat screwdriver in little slot on left side of plastic cover lens and push in retainer latch and pull down assembly for inspection. That's where you'll find the issue.

Side note: You young folks have quite an advantage if you can follow the electrical diagrams in a Bentley under the light provided by a 240's courtesy lamp!

hi arty b- thanks tons for your always superb advice. all these years seeking your good advice- hold it, never did see one question though was sage art stumped- did it ever happen and you gave up? anyway will try exactly what you said which confirmed my suspicions. first though I will roll the #8 fuse to see if that takes care of it like it did on the signal problem last week. if no soap then down will come the dome light assembly . lately strangely have had a clump of 1F ailments with the 245. the next time someone asks me when in the hell are you going to get rid of that uglyasa mofo brick tank, someone may get hurt. will advise you on my current success or clusterf@!#k. oldduke

Just today, had to fix this on the 89 245. Dome light didn't work from the door or the switch. A bit of emery cloth on the switch contacts got it going again. The grounding screw was a bit loose as well.

What engineers say and what they mean by it:
Engineering says: "Extensive effort is being applied on a fresh approach to the problem"
Engineers meant: We just hired three new guys; we'll let them kick it around for a while.

hi arty b- thanks tons for that picture you posted. got to it yesterday. used a piece of emery paper to clean the contacts on both sides of the switch and tightened the ground wire. full on dome light then worked and continues to do so. can you imagine what a dealer would have shystered me for? bet he would have said only answer is to replace the switch plate at a cost of only $200. thanks for your help. will owe you a gin fizz next time I pass the creek by your abode. have to wait for the snow drifts to melt though. oldduke

hi arty b- thanks for remembering to get back to me with your experience. there are 3 positions for the switch. dead center is full off(no light with open door),throw switch to front of car and and open door light comes on and throw switch to the rear of the car and dome light is supposed to come on . mine works with the door and used to work with the switch in the rearmost position. that would be useful if your aunt flossie is in the passenger seat and wants to read your copy of Bentley while you avoid coppas on thunder road which is on the other side of the creek. will inspect when I get the dome cover off with a thin screwdriver to release the snap holding the release. will tighten the ground screw too and of course remove any corrosion or other debris. may have to bend the contacts for a tighter fit too. may even put a touch of de oxy grease or some other such mousemilk so it will last for another 28 years. thanks tons oldduke

            Hiya Uncle OldDuke!

Dave Barton also advocates zinc paste. Cheaper and easier than the DeoxIT-D I went on about.

            https://www.240turbo.com/volvo240mods.html#anticorrosivepaste

Dave Barton also links a page on Ron Kwas' site.

            http://www.sw-em.com/anti_corrosive_paste.htm

I've not had any DeoxIT-D since someone borrowed the small can of it as he had issues with his 1986 240. So like Art says some abrasive paper. I use SuperLube silicon NGLI 2 grease in AMM, ignition power stage, and the sedan taillight flexi circuit to bulb holder contacts.

I have some NoOX that uses copper flakes for bonded copper contacts. I did use this at the fuses ends in the fuse panel.

Hope that. Sorry to be a total and complete so and so!

        Hi oldduke,

Some time ago, I discovered my enjoyment of a vehicle had little to do with its performance or style, but more to do with how many little niggling annoyances and broken features it carried. Fixing the 1F list will vastly improve your appreciation of the thing, if you're like me.

It has been 20 years since I've driven anything else, but I still reach for the light switch knob on the dash as if I can turn the dimmer all the way up until it clicks to turn on the dome light. Muscle memory. Same habit has me briefly hunting for the high beam control with my left foot. Even want to pull something out on the dash before starting on a cold morning.

hi arty b - good point. actually tend to agree with you. one benefit is it conserves precious energy when you only have to drop 1 f sharp in the smaller 1F jobs. replaced at least 5 of those foot button hi beam switches. they would tend to get loaded with moisture and grit and crap out. regards oldduke
