1994 940 intermittent stall 900 1994

Dear fellow brickboarders,
I am reading through some of these posts.
All of you are amazing and helpful.

Concerning my 1994 940: it will start and run! If I let it idle or drive it for 50 minutes or so it stops running. It will restart it and it will run again. After so many minutes it will stop again. Seems like I have to move the accelerator pedal for it to crank and run again.

Does anyone have any ideas or remedies on this issue?

Blessings!
Enrique442

Kind Sir,
Thank you for the help!

I did replace the CPS about a month ago.
It would not start at all. When it was replaced it
would start and run. And now it will stall.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear enrique442,

Hope you're well. Yes! The ignition power stage (IPS; Volvo Part#: 3501921; Bosch Part #: 0 227 100 124) likely is "on the way out". This part is available from: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products?keywords=0%20227%20100%20124 . If your car has the factory-original part (made in Germany), that part doesn't owe you a penny!

The IPS - affixed to the inner fender wall (driver's side, for a non-turbo, about a foot or so from the headlamp [i.e., towards the windshield]) - is "flat", with a gray cap. It is mounted on an aluminum "heat sink", which is secured to the fender wall by two screws.

Between the IPS and its heat sink there should be a heat-conducting grease. That has probably long dried out. The dried-out grease slows heat transfer to the heat sink, which dissipates he heat. So, when the power stage overheats, it "cuts out".

You might try: (a) removing the dried-out heat-conducting grease and replacing with fresh grease; (b) cleaning the contacts on the power state and its connector with an aerosol de-oxidizer (e.g., Deoxit or similar). Sometimes an invisibly-thin layer of corrosion can disrupt the flow of power. So, do not rely on visual inspection to ascertain if a connector is corroded.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Enrique,
Is your car a turbo (Bosch ignition), or non-turbo (Rex ignition)?

Chris,
Thank you for checking!
It has a Bosch ignition system and
It is not a turbo.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Are there any fault codes stored in the OBD?
