1989 Volvo 240 - Steering Couplers Question. 200 1989

Hello all, I'm wondering if the steering couplers and/or u-joints are the same top to bottom? I want to replace both, would 2 of these be what I'm after? https://www.carid.com/1989-volvo-240-series-steering-parts/professional-parts-sweden-steering-shaft-joint-1423186902.html

    they are different.

the upper one seldom fails but does on occasion. if your upper one is decent leave it be since they are longer made by anyone so you're only choice is used from a junkyard

Have had success using a good penetrating oil/lubricant on them in freeing them up and avoiding replacement all together.

The long term lubrication method I use is :

        - pack a hand full of grease between the U(s),

        - take a 6 inch wide strip of polythene and wrap at least two layers,

        - secure each end with plastic ties.

I figure that keep away dust, rust and moisture.

To say the truth I never went there after 20 years to check how it performs, but I will.

I was going to post the same thing as joekidd. WD-40 applied to a lower joint with a distinct "notch" to loosen things up and then oil squirted on it every few months or so for maintenance. - Dave

        +1
Regular application of penetrating oil while rotating the u-joint can usually save them.

    1989 Volvo 240 - Steering Couplers Question. 200 1989

    Hi,

No, they're not the same. This is the lower that often fails, while the upper almost never does. This a good price if the shipping isn't too much. I paid $42 shipped on EBay for one recently.

The early 240's used cast iron knuckles which weren't to hard to remove but these aluminum ones can be a real pain, especially if it's seen any salt.

If you have a torch and can get it up to 800*F the aluminum will soften and your screwdriver or wedge will open it up quite readily.

    regards,
    Peter
