Air box thermostat 900 1993

Been struggling for half the day trying to figure out how to remove the faulty thermostat in my 940 non turbo. My 240 was easy compared to this construction. There are two tabs which when pushed in dont free up the thermostat casing for removal. The themostat casing looks as though it should just push out of the air box, but its unmovable. Must be doing something wrong. I manually pulled the flap to the open air posit and put a small screw to hold it in place for now. Does anybody have any experience with gettting into this air box thermostat?

    Hi Dom's940,

    Sorry for a tardy reply.

Futzed with this in 740 and 940 non-Turbo in junkyards.

I've seen the thermostat in 700 and 900. The Volvo 700-900 Series FAQ makes poor mention of it here, yet no mention how to replace, yet mentions what happens to the AMM / MAF in short order with all hot air all the time:

    https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineFuelinjection.htm

The air box thermostat collapses when forced. IIRC (if I recall correctly), with care, you push down on the brass-color housing at the top or the edge at the silver-color plunger end. You collpase the silver small silver plunger so the brass body slide out the series of aligned holes. You may have to twist (a small oil dab may help) the brass housing as brass can corrode and get stuck in the series of holes that secure the thermostat brass body.

I've looked at Tasca Volvo Parts. FCP Euro, and iPd. No air box thermostat. I know Turbo does not have the air box thermostat assembly in the air filter box. Yet yours in not turbo.

I guess you have this? Wahler / Borg-Warner PN 70411

    https://www.ipdusa.com/products/5451/103083-airbox-thermostat-valve

Don't damage the housing, or at least get the part numbers from the brass body. I'll guess you have replacement already.

I see iPd USA removed other images of the air filter box thermostat. Hmmm.

Not sure if this is meant for 940. Fits 240.

If after market, replace every so often, I've read.

If in northern climes like Finland or maybe upstate New York, you want the warmed air blending feature to work for reduced emission and shortened warm-up time, and wear. If in warm climes, delete the preheater accordion hose between exhaust manifold and air filter box inlet, remove, don't discard, the air filter box thermostat assembly. Remove gently. Check with your state emissions laws. Like you would not want to remove the accordion hose between exhaust manifold and air filter box inlet in CA-state as the state inspects the emissions devices.

On all my 240s, both the normal ambient air and what was the heated air intake are open to ambient air. MO-state does not inspect emissions controls.

    Hope that helps.

    cheers,

    Dud McDuffed.

Thanks Kitty for the info. Have not been able to locate a thermostat for the box just yet. The car is always garaged so start-up and initial idling without the thermostat is not a problem. I had this same issue with my 91 240, however was able to purchase a replacement t-stat. As a matter of fact , the t-stat that you have pictured is the same one I replaced in it. I will follow your directions attempting to get that t-stat out of the box. Seems to be a poor way to design something knowing it will need replacement over a short period of time. Cant condemn Volvo engineers, great cars, at least the older tanks. Thanks very much for the response, always appreciative. GB

        Hi GB,

Tasca Volvo Parts is cheapest for Volvo OEM. The thermo will be more $$$, yet I guess it is one of the better Euro thermo maker above Borg Warner t-stat you get for the 240 air filter box flappy preheat valve.

I have a 700-900 not Turbo (Turbo does not have the preheat flappy valve feature) thermo I took home from a junkyard and as memory serves they are the same, yet I am not sure.

Hope this helps, yet Spook may be best able to help with as he has a VADIS CD-ROM that shows the exploded views.

The Volvo Parts where house site also does not show this anymore in any exploded drawing around the air filter box.

At worse, remove the preheat assembly and block off the preheat inlet. (Or, as I did, leave the preheat air inlet port open after removal of the air hose between the exhaust manifold heat shield and the air filter box.

Though is in climes of persistent cold weather, it is best to leave this preheater function in place and perfectly functional for quicker engine warm up, reduced emissions,a nd improved fuel economy.

You may want to ring up your nearby Volvo stealership and see if they offer the OEM air filter box thermo for sale. Get the part number. And then compare at Tasca Parts website.

          Kitty, thanks for info.
I opened the flap to input fresh air. Also, checked Tasca for the
t-stat, no good. Checked all the sites, no luck. As with my 240, I
just simply ran without the t-stat hooked up and the flap permanently held
open.I had forgotten about Tasca until you brought it up. They had a part
for my last 240 which I could not find anywhere, even IPD! They have an
awful lot of stuff, wonder if any of it is actually in stock?? Good to know.
On another topic, was checking out the price of a new distributor cap. I
thought perhaps 10-15 dollars. Was surprised to see the price of 50-60 dollars.
Dont understand why so much. Made by Bosch so expect to pay a bit more, but
sounds more like what Volvo would charge. Must be something special about that
cap. There's quite a bit I am learning about the 940 with regard to the older 240's. Thanks again. Nick

            Hi Nick,

            Happy Sunday.

Could you photograph the air box preheater flappy valve thermostat you removed showing the part numbers? A few over all images and close up images detailing part number and maker's mark (if any). You can post to the BrickPix gallery.

You can post the image using a little html in the message. Art B. has instructions:

Better to use the complete URL of the image like:
            http://cleanflametrap.com/imgcode.jpg

As the relative URL the BrickPix displays in the HTML box to the right of the image.

Or upload the images and I ca post. I'll bet others would want a loo see to help solve the issue of no air filter box flappy valve thermostat; more so if you reside in mighty and power Finland, the world's greatest republic like Switerland.

In spite of the BrickPix instructions, your only limit is an image of maximum one megabyte (1024 kilobytes) file size of any image size. You are not limited by the 640 x 480 or 640 x 640 pixel images.

            A Volvo 240 Bosch brand distributor cap for 1993 240 is 50-60$???

            Where?

I'd been collecting distributor caps and rotors and other bits from junkyards that were recent installs or used gently for 240. So, I don't pay retail for what is at essence new.

iPd USA has the Bosch distributor cap for your 1993 240 for like 13$ + ship?

            https://www.ipdusa.com/products/6145/100247-ignition-distributor-cap

The web page contains both Bosch and Volvo part numbers.

Here is a laundry list for haute tension ignition bits for 1992 240 at FCP Euro:
            https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volvo-parts/240/Distributor/?year=1993&m=20&e=914

            Maybe closer to you.

Here is Tasca on the cap - 15$:

50$ where for a Bosch or Volvo distributor cap for 1993 240?
