Is the bracket on the bottom of the window glass removable?

1991 745

I've got a driver's door glass that does not close evenly. It is not an unusual problem, but there doesn't seem to be an easy fix.

It would seem feasible to move the glass up at one end of the channel it fits into along the bottom in an effort to have it be in the proper position to close and leave no noisy air gap at the top back edge.

I have an extra driver's door glass that I would like to separate from the channel so as to reposition the glass at one end. Has anyone ever removed that channel and if so how did you accomplish that. Failing to find someone who has that experience what suggestions do you have in trying to get it loose?

I thought I would give this a bump so as to run it by one more time.

Still looking for ideas on how to loosen the brackets's grip on the glass. Any suggestions?

Never done it on a Volvo but on a Buick. Used a heat gun to remove good brackets from a bad window to a good window(but had wrong brackets, canadian window). Heat applied and a rubber mallet tapping the brackets off. But my brackets were 2 made out of plastic.

I've been on this board over 20yrs. I've seen numerous posts on window alignment but never anyone trying to move the bracket. All fixes I have seen involved worn out parts in the window assembly.

To add to what aleekat wrote - I became involved with Volvos in the mid-70's and worked at an "indy" Volvo shop in the mid-80's. Back then I had to deal with many lower window channel issues on the then aging 140 series population. To put it simply - the 140 channels would rust away so removing them and installing new channels was common. Removing the old channels was a tedious chore - so much so that when confronted with a broken window it was cost effective to simply install a new channel on the new glass. 240 series-and later-window channels are made of better material and I can't recall ever having to replace a channel on one. As aleekat mentions--any alignment problem would be in the linkage and adjustment of the window crank assembly. -- Dave

I appreciate both you and aleekat for responding.

I never had to deal with a problem like this with any 240 I have ever come across. This is the third 740 I have owned that the driver's window will not close properly and the gap is always at the rear corner of those windows. The result is an annoying wind noise right about ear level.

I have successfully swapped out the scissors/motor assembly in one of those cars from a parts car I had. The pivot point of the two arms appears to be the wear point, but the window glass seems to fit loosely in the channels as well.

Being able to reposition the glass in the bracket would allow the glass to be raised at the front edge and the result would be for the glass to be properly aligned at the top of its travel which would eliminate the gap/noise.

As far as I have been able to determine there is no "adjustment" in the mechanism or the channels.

Yes, it can be, but before you do, have you checked all the plastic pieces?

Did you remove the "tuning fork" looking plastic pieces that are installed in the 2 slots in the bottom of the window lift bracket? There is also a "tuning fork" mounted on the door, but it could be updated and then it looks different.

The "tuning fork" pieces are in place and appear to be in good shape. There is some movement at the pivot point of the scissors like pieces involved with raising and lowering the window.

Rather than cutting the arm and welding it back with a little additional length I thought tipping the glass in the pinched bracket at the bottom might be a reasonable solution.

My first thought of how to loosen the grip on the bottom of the window was careful application of heat, but hoped that someone might have experience or additional thoughts on how to achieve that.
