1994 940 "Absorber' 900

I'm still working on the 94 940 NA Bosch with the fuel pump next to the fuel filter and under the driver's seat. There is a very rusty part just behind the fuel pump I would like to replace. I looked at #20:
https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/products/Volvo/Absorber/1114501/1389725.html

and I think this is the part.
Here is a look at the part with the other fuel system parts. #19 here:

What can I use in place of this part and is it really needed. I wonder if it is just an expansion tank to smooth out the flow of fuel (maybe I'm wrong her). I'd like to replace this rusty part along with the fuel pump and filter but this part is no longer available.

1994 940 "Absorber' 900

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. The part you reference is Bosch #0 280 161 037. It is Volvo part #1389725 and may be had from a US-based Volvo dealer for about $230.

According to Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - Part #1389725 was used on 740s up to and including 1992 models. Thus, I do not recall seeing this unit on a '94 940.

It is an "absorber", so likely is used to "even-out" the flow of fuel from the in-tank pre-pump. In VADIS, this part is described as a service "alternative". That suggests it was not factory-installed, but installed later if needed to ensure a steady flow of fuel.

As B230 engines have a fuel pressure regulator mounted at the front of the fuel rail, I wonder why any other fuel pressure regulator was thought needful.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks Spook, I thought it was to even fuel flow. I have another 940 with the under the driver seat fuel pump which does not have this absorber. I think I will get rid of it when I change to fuel pump and filter because it is quite rusted.
I'll post back with the results of any changes in the engine operation when I get the work done, hopefully before it gets too cold here in MN.
