What Sort of Mileage Should I Get from My Volvo? 200 1988

The speedometer works but odometer doesn't work on my 1988 244 DL N/A LH 2.2 with AW-71 transmission. It's stuck at 284k and that's how I got it. I do mostly city driving and IIRC got about 25 mpg with my 1980 242 DL with M45 transmission (RIP 2008).

My primary concern is that I use mileage to determine preventive repairs. What I plan to do is use this estimated mpg and multiply that by the number of gallons of gas I use over time to estimate total miles driven.

What do you think of this?

Thanks

I mounted an hourmeter in one of the aux instrument holes.
left it covered with blank cover(didn't like the look)
Running hours is probably a better measure for maintenance intervals
Measuring fuel is also good but requires diligence.
Ebay or ali hourmeters are really cheap!

if you don't want to fix the odometer, maybe you could use 20mpg as an average to calculate your maintenance schedule.
my odometer doesn't work either but on the other hand the car does not do many miles, so i use elapsed time as a guide on when to do routine maintenance.

Our 1980 245 has had odometer issues (cable driven) for a few years. If the cabin is cool the odo works - when warmed up it stops--always on the 9 tenths digit. One trip from NY to NC the gas gauge was acting up as well so I used "hours driven" to calculate gas stops :-) -- Dave

I think you should repair the odometer or use a gps solution.

      Thanks for your reply.

I don't know how to fix the odometer. Since the speedometer works, it's got to be something inside the instrument cluster box. My auto insurance doesn't mind that the odometer doesn't work. However, I'm unsure if it's legal for me to switch out with a junkyard part. Anyone know?

I have a dumb phone, so GPS apps won't work, if that's what you mean?

Odo gears and GPS 200 1988

Odometer is normally a broken tooth/ teeth in the gear cluster. The gears used to be available separately and are cheap. Don’t know if they still are??

He might have meant a separate GPS unit like a Garmin. Or a smartphone will have navigation.

          Thanks.

Can I just switch out the odometer subunit with a junkyard odometer?

Yes, but that is assuming a broken gear tooth is your problem. You will need to verify that. Also check that donor gear cluster is good.
