240 Wagon Tire Sizes 14" Steel Wheels 200

I did search this topic and there are many posts but most of the them are old and don't reflect the current market.

My 88 wagon with 14" steelies needs a new set of tires. I have always like Michelin tires and they seem to last well. The current set lasted 82K.

Currently on the car are P195 75 R 14. These are quickly becoming obsolete and Michelin doesn't make this size anymore. No other major brands are available either.

I think my choices are

1. 185 70 R 14 Michelin which Costco has in stock at a great price of about 390.00 mounted and balanced.
2. 195 70 R 14 Michelin which Costco has in stock at a great price of about 390.00 mounted and balanced.
3. 205 70 R 14 but not from a major brand like Michelin or BSFS.

I am disappointed we don't have better choices for our 240s.

I am thinking 195 70 R 14 Michelin

Any thoughts, experience, or suggestions are appreciated.

I ordered the 195 70 R 14 and will have them put on in the next few days. I'll let you all know how they do.
The Costco deal is hard to resist. Out the door for 392.00.

hi sages of volvo tires- youre right about the disappeared 75 series tires. was told that the 70 series which is a wider tire might not be a good choice for the 240. reason was the wider tire might rub the fender well in fast tight turns on thunder road. also was told mpg would be less due to more tire surface on the road which equals more resistance and work for the engine. anything to this or is it pure bullqweet or car dealer lies to supercharge your credit card even if your volvo doesn't have a turbo? don't forget there are always those who will pat you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other and it can happen to you. thanks tons oldduke

I've had 70 series tires on plenty of my 200 series cars, don't drive like a "li'l ol man" on Thunder Road and never had an interference problem. - Dave

I found the old Michelin Harmony tires to be very good tires and the newer Defender models to be even better on my 1990 240 wagon.

The Defender tires actually had a much better grip in snow and and slightly stiffer feel out on the highway than that of the previous Harmony models. All in all, it was a nice surprise. Until I found Harmony tires way back when, I struggled for years to find a suitable replacement to the old MX 4 Rainforest tires. The Harmony was a good replacement to the MX 4 and the Defender an even better one.

      Perfect.

As I need to get me the same size in two sets of four by the end of the year.

Keep buying them 14" tires. Some automakers use sizes down to 13" to the day.

I have four sets of steelies.

Though would rather 700-900 15" or 16" steelies someday.

Old delaminated alloy wheels making alloy wheel metal contact to the ferrous alloy hubworks metal cause corrosion.

What about moving up to 15" wheels as it seems that there are more available tires in 15" sizes.

I've given this some thought and this post reminds me that I was going to come around here and ask what others might recommend for suitable 15" wheels for a 240. Shirley there must be something with the correct offset and bolt pattern?

(sorry to hijack, but perhaps the answer here would inform the OP as well)

You can use the 15" wheels for 740/940 series cars as the difference in offset is only something like 5mm. I think wheels from a 960 have a FWD offset. - Dave

    Hi,

Just so you know, Michelin tires just went on sale yesterday with $70 off a set of four and later a cash card is mailed to you worth $60 ... if you use their Costco Visa Card to purchased them. They are pushing to get more members to get and use that card for transactions.

I just completed a trip to Denver Colorado recently and I hit lots of different Costco’s stores along the way. I’m afraid it could almost be a fetish. (:)

The story I get is Our tires sizes are available at some stores depending on the local area demand. It’s a decision done per each store manager to stock or not.
It’s an inventory hit and miss strategy that members must learn to do, I think?

I know this from a store that I can visit regularly during my wayward travels.
They had them in stock at that moment but they were already spoken for.
The clerk also said we sell a fair amount of them here but sorry we are out.
Then again, those could have been ordered, but yes they we’re stocked on the computers screen none the less. So it’s open to interpretation or maybe translation in my brain? (:)

During my ordering yesterday, I was told by the installer there, that Michelin was going to stop production of the 195-width only. If true, that newest... news!

In talking with him I was also thinking of getting some 195-60-15’s for some 940’s Orion alloy rims I picked up for (?) $200 or $250.
It was during this inquiry he told me that Costco has had such a good sales each month that their warehouses were nearly depleted. Mostly of what Michelin had for them in the USA is gone!
He has woman customer who went ahead and ordered a 15 inch size to get in on a sale price. This was despite them showing a ten week back order status. I wonder now if she missed this sale or maybe not? Details in that story I failed to ask about during a call back phone call. Took him five hours to call me back from my first call. They are busy!

He didn’t know if Michelin was having to go into production soon to make that size or was having them shipped in from their overseas warehouses. He thought ten weeks seem to be a lot!
In both sizes, we are talking about the “Defender” market name tires. They Must be a good seller for Michelin! I have two sets running on my fleet of six the last two years.

Years ago I stocked up with three sets of Michelin “X” Radials at one time. They are no longer made.
Back then, it was a free tire only sale.
Those Three sets were not something that they sneezed at because they were also carry-out.
Easy stats for those tire buster’s bosses!
I think it sped up my delivery. I got called in less than two days! The dozen must have made a near good load that much better to helped a lot. They said it happens with ordering time being fast.

I spent on my $293.00 for the set to carry home. They might be in Friday or the first of next week he said but the card is already charged, so they shipped, as supposedly it works that way on other things!
Doing my own tires at home, plus the $60 cash card, it will be like they are paying me to mount and balance them. They should, as I’m removing a defect with the counter weights and the labor, right? (:)

On the 15 inch set, I just might order them near the end of this great sale.
No rush. I’v had these Orion rims for three years or there abouts!
I have to get my budget wrinkle ironed out after paying out for ten days of hotel/motel stays around the Denver Navy reunion costs.

If a hot summer of spending money, is the same as burning money, then I need to rig up some wrist band held fire extinguishers!

    I might be turning into a deal-arsonist.
    (:-)
    Phil
