The larger of the two tail lights is the typical 240 tail light (this one is off of an'82). My parts stash has a pair of the smaller ones. I don't see many 240's with the smaller ones. I did see a 240 GT that had this type.

Can someone please tell me the application for the smaller tail light?

Definitely '81 or later with the "curl around the side" outer end -- I think the '81 242 lights are like this one. -- Dave

I've got an 82 US model -- I replaced the old/cracking 5 panel lights with the later model 6 panels. So I may be able to shed some light -- but I can't even find a "gallery" let alone see the picture....

The smaller 5 panel is what came on my 1982 242DL OEM. I replaced it with the larger 6 panel light a few years back. I think in the US, most everything came with the 6 panels starting about 1983. However, the 6 panels were used in some applications before that - particularly the more highly optioned cars -- for example, I've seen 82 and earlier that came with the PRV 6 cylinder engine that had 6 panel lights from the factory. So there were a range of years where both sets of lights were used in the 240 sedans depending on what model the car was.

If your car came with the 5 panel lights and you want to use a set of the 6 panels, you'll have to cut away some sheet metal from the rear fascia.

Removed the six panel tail light assembly from a 240 coupe / sedan before or after third brake light model year?

The wiring changes once or twice at the connector to the brake light.

Any year stamps on the six panel lenses? I guess I see 96 on the center lower red reflector? I'll guess Valeo and not Hella on the lens. The remaining lenses appear without a stamp or maker's mark.

I guess that halps.
