Can't find Registered Owner - have VIN 1800 1971

I have purchased a 1971 Volvo P1800E, here in Texas, and have run into a little problem. The party from whom I purchased said car has since died and couldn't find the title. He never transferred it but says the car was given to him as payment for a debt in 1986. I have been trying to buy this car for over 10 years and have indeed seen it on his property for the last 30yrs. He says the car was from Maryland, and indeed there is the remnant of a MD inspection sticker, with partial number still showing, on the windshield. No license tag. I have exhausted all means known to me in finding the previous/current owners information but all to no avail! I have contacted; MVD, DMV, (Both MD & TX) Texas State Highway Patrol inspection station/office, and the court system in MD via a Writ Mandamus. I know I can get a Bonded Title for the car but would rather find the registered owners information and get a clear blue title.

So I am hoping one of you guys can help me! ANY help anyone can give me would be much appreciated. And if someone can help I can send pics of VIN plate, Trim plate and stamped body and chassis numbers.

Thanks - Fast71
JW

Ps. I yes, I have contacted Nick Tarlton - and he was not interested in helping unless he could steal it for nothing.

I have been a resident of MD all my life (80+) and I've never had an inspection sticker on the windshield of any of my many cars. We have never had an inspection until somewhat recently and that is only reguired when selling a car....it has to be inspected before being retitled. No sticker is ever put on the windshield. PA, VA and DC, all neighbors, have periodic inspections and stickers. Tom

Do you have a bill of sale with the vin number on it from the previous owner?
I believe that you need not be a resident to register a vehicle in Vermont and they don't title older cars. You may want to research that.

Part of what might be throwing a wrench in your search is that the 1800 VIN numbering convention doesn't fit the standard format used today. Various states may have done it various ways.

You could do like the thieves and buy an old rust bucket 1800E for $500 that comes with documentation, then transplant the body tags over to the subject car. Wait! I didn't suggest that....

What a bummer - I'm in Fort Worth and had a rust bucket '71 that I bought just for the M41 drive train to use in my '73 ES. Then I sent the body to the crusher - long gone now.

What if you were to present a notarized letter from the deceased's family saying that he had the car for 30+ years and has died and the title can't be located. Would that only get you a bonded title? I can see you not wanting to put a lot of time and money into a car and at the end of the day not have a clear title.

    Good luck!

I know that Maine provides an easy path to papers. Do you know anyone there? I have an acquaintance that regularly bought "barn find" old European cars with no papers and would go through Maine to get them legit. - Dave

The Hot Rod Guys run into this problem--old stuff in barns etc, You might try looking on a few Hot Rod websites like Jalopnik. Some states are EZ I have heard. Most DMV's are super picky because of stolen, rebuilt wrecks and such. Check Hemmings classified. Buy it right w/ no title, get it registered and drive the wheels off it. Good Luck!! Ken
