No brakes when car is running 900 1994

My 940 had been sitting for about a year waiting for my daughter to get her license. The front calipers were pretty rusted and were dragging. After trying to clean & lube them I replaced them.

All 4 brakes were bled and they felt like they stiffened up. However, as soon as I started the car the brake pedal went to the floor without resistance. While the car is running and the brake pedal is fully depressed I cannot spin the front wheels. I replaced the master cylinder and re-bled the brakes, but the problem still persists. I tried to see if there was fluid in the booster, but either there isn't any or I'm not able to reach the bottom. The booster hose has vacuum and doesn't appear to have any leaks.

I could really use some help as I'm out of ideas.

Did you bleed the MC? There should be 2 nipples on the MC for bleeding.

I'd prefer to use 2 persons method for bleeding when any brake parts is replaced. This is because you could use higher pedal pressure (plus open the bleeder screw more) to force any air out. Pressure bleeding (i.e. Motive bleeder) is more suitable to replace old brake fluid.

    Regards,

As Amir suggests, if you’ve opened the system and introduced air at the MC then it can be helpful to “bench bleed” the MC. Otherwise you have to push that air bubble all the way through the system and out of the caliper bleeders. That can mean bleeding a LOT of fluid through the system especially if you have an anti-lock brake servo. And, as you probably know, you don’t want to let the reservoir run too low during the entire bleeding process.

Is there any possibility you got the front calipers mixed up left for right and the bleeders aren’t on the top?

There is a suggested order in which to bleed the brakes. I want to say it goes left rear, right rear, right front, left front. But I’m not 100% sure on that. Maybe another respondent can correct/confirm.

I was rather tired when I posted and forgot to mention I did bench bleed the MC. I do have the calipers on the correct side and I used the manual "One-man bleeder" to bleed the calipers starting with the passenger rear. Then moving to driver's rear, passenger front, and finally driver's front. I'll try bleeding the MC again from the bleeders this time.

        Thank you for the responses.

Well, I feel rather foolish for not trying the MC bleeders earlier, but that did it. I bench bled the MC from the connections that are under the MC, but i guess I figured I didn't need to bleed it from the bleeder nipples since I did a bench bleed.

Thanks to you both for your help.
