91 Volvo 740 AC HELP! 700

I have a 91 750 4 cylinder non-turbo. The AC is not working and we have narrowed it down to what Volvo calls the AC muffler, part number 1388607. Its a discontinued part and we have had no luck in finding one. I live in the southern US (New Orleans) so AC is big deal right now. Added to that there are not a lot of these cars down here so junkyards are no help. Anyone know where I can find some new old stock or someone have a parts car in the backyard or know of a junkyard with 740's?

Does it leak at the muffler part where the pressure relief screws in? The pressure relief can be adjusted by turning the screw in the middle so it does not blow off as easily. Or if it is leaking at the screw connection maybe some AC sealant like nylog would help.

Volvo abandoned the muffler for replacement parts so the later ones will not have the potato looking section. Just a straight section were the pressure relief screws in.

I would think a local hose shop should be able to fabricate one if you bring in the old part.

Do you happen to know the later model part number by chance? I've been searching around and I'm not sure what to call it.

I believe the older one with the muffler was 1388706 and the newer one with out the muffler is 3537375.

Volo lisle, http://volvopartslisle.com/assembly/32724237/Air-Conditioning , shows the earlier number being replaced.

Proparts Sweden makes the aftermarket one. Maybe if you contact eeuroparts they can follow up and try to get it in.

We found a hose shop that could make the part!

One of the fittings it twisted and it leaks as a result.

I thought we could just get a new one made but for some reason, it's been pretty difficult.

AC muffler/silencer 700

Hi Vespalucci,

The correct part number for the muffler is 1388706 (not 1388607). Taken from Volvo 740 parts book. Item 19 (labeled as silencer). The muffler should have a small valve (item 20) on its side. Dismantle the valve and clean the muffler's insides - use flexible wire, degreaser, carb cleaner, etc. Should be able to blow freely through it afterwards. Reinstall it back. The item is just to reduce compressor pumping noise. Not going to decrease/increase any AC performance.

Amarin

The fitting on it is twisted and leaks. I need to replace it. Here is a pic link

The part number you gave me is still discontinued. We are trying to find a shop that can possibly weld a new fitting on, or just find a replacement somewhere although that is proving difficult.

Alternatively.. 700

Ok I see the part but couldn't appreciate any undue distortion at the fittings thats causing the leak. Anyway you could try using bigger/thicker O ring to compensate for any leak with Nylog. Nylog is a thick mucous-like O-ring seal enhancer available from online AC shops. Blue Nylog for R134a and red Nylog for R12 refrigerant.

There is a straight pipe replacement (without muffler) part number 3537375. Eeuroparts seems to have no stock.

Could try at other places or boneyard.

boneyard is no use. I've checked all around my area. Not that many of these older Volvo's down this way. I'll look for 3537375. Thanks!

I've never heard of a muffler for the a/c. Do you have a picture? compressor, condenser, orifice tube, receiver/dryer/accumulator.
