Strut Dents Underside of Hood?? 900

1998 Volvo S90-

Heard a rattling while driving from front passenger wheel, I figured it was just a blown sway bar link...

When I arrived home I realized that the strut had actually dented the underside of my hood! I am guessing the strut mount has failed? Anyone experienced this?

On the 240 series Volvos the rubber bushing in the strut bearing assembly can fail completely - in which case the strut can actually pierce the hood (while radically changing your wheel alignment)! Sounds like yours has failed partially. I agree with previous post - this is big safety issue.

Yep it was the strut mount, it had just dented the hood, not pierced it completely. Replaced both sides, it seems there's no way to tell in advance if one is going to fail!

Look for cracks and deterioration in the rubber.

Also, listen for groans or other unusual noises when turning slowly and the road level changes. My 240 used to groan when the road level changed and the car was turning.
