vapor canister 900 1991

I am trying to replace my vapor canister with purge valve, part #1276694, but no one seems to have one. Is there an alternative replacement part? Or does anyone know where I can find one?

Check/repair/replace vapor canister 900 1991

Hi,

You could search on eBay for similar non-Volvo part such as below:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-Charcoal-Cannister-Rochester-7030305/252572944326?hash=item3ace8547c6:g:pukAAOSwTA9X7VyG

Our canister in 900 series car is made by the same Rochester company. Unless your purge valve is defective you need not replace this canister. How to check? Apply vacuum to the smallest port (first port) on top of the purge valve. This would allow stored fuel vapour to flow out from the bigger port (2nd port) underneath the valve. The last port (3rd port) marked as "fuel tank" is connected to the fuel tank where the vapour comes from.

You could also pry open the canister at its bottom to replace its contents (i.e small charcoal pellets - size around 2-3mm each). Charcoal pellets are obtainable at eBay at 500gm or 1kg package. But in practice there's no need to replace these. They last for so many years unless due to flood damage etc.

If you notice fuel odour around the engine compartment (rule out any fuel leak first!) it may be due to non-activation of the purge valve. Loose/degraded canister vacuum rubber lines may lead to this. Replace with new. Also check the 2 vacuum brass nipples (which connect to the canister via vacuum lines) at the throttle body, clean with some carb spray to ensure they work.

Regards,
Amarin.

Dear pb,

Hope you're well. I reasonably believe this part (#1276694) no longer is available from Volvo. This canister was used in 940s and 960s (but not 740s, if Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - is accurate).

Volvo part #1275290 was used in a 1996 960. I do not know if this part - which seems still to be available at Volvo dealers (about $80) - can be substituted for that used in a 940.

If not, then the part you need should be available from a salvage yard.

Question: why do you seek to replace this part? I recall few posts mentioning this carbon-filled canister, which traps fuel vapors and sends them to the engine, to be burned. As it has no moving parts, it is not obvious how it could fail.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Spook - my canister failed when I hit a raccoon at 70 MPH.

Our 854 needed a new bumper, bumper coverr, canister and I had to fix the bracket.

This was in '01, and I had no trouble getting a new canister.

Instead of painting a stock bumper, I purchased a R model bumper.

Do you know how big the boxes are for a bumper and cover? I could not fit them into an 850 wagon with the seat down - I had to take one out of its box and break the box down!
