front seats for 1990 240 wagon 200 1990

Hi all,
I'm looking for a good set of front seats to replace the ones in my car that, upon recent inspection under the seat covers it came with, look like they were chewed up by an angry dog.

I'm in the Bay Area, CA and am willing to drive to pick up new seats anywhere from Santa Cruz to Fort Bragg, CA.

Thanks.

    I put 850 seats in my 544.

In the junkyard system, supply determines price.

Find some nice modern Volvo seats and modify them to fit.

I ground the seat mounts off the 850 frames and had two 3 inch by 1/2 inch aluminum straps welded on. The seat adjustment is inside the seat frame - I have an electric driver's seat!

I removed the 544 seat rails and mounted a 1/2 inch aluminum plate and bolted the seat frames to that. Then I cut away any material that was not needed - like for rear seat foot room.

I chose cloth seats from a car that had an intact interior because I have no AC.

I'll echo what other responders have said and add info about how I found 2 new front seats for my car, which also had the "foam turned to dust" problem that many have. Mine is a 1976...so it's incrementally harder to find replacement seats for mine.

I used http://car-part.com and searched junk yards. The key there seems to be to broaden your search to all geographic areas and to put in years that cover all that might include a part that fits your car. For example, I searched front seat for a Volvo 240 model years 1985 to 1995 (I may be somewhat off in terms of that range) and found 4 pages of results. THEN the important thing is to only look at listings that have pictures (that cuts down the number of hits tremendously). Bear in mind that the picture shown may not be of a seat, but click on the thumbnail and you'll probably get a gallery of pics from that car and one will show the interior and seats.

Then finally, you call the yard that has a picture of something you'd want. You will likely find that a good number of the places you call no longer have that car ("sent to the crusher"), but someone will still have what you want. So it just takes some phone work. Those that still have the car will probably need to go look at it, and then report back to you. And then the haggling on price begins.

Many of these yards will ship using a freight carrier or maybe you can arrange the Greyhound Bus shipping thing. When I did this (sending 2 seats and 4 door cards from IL to MA) last spring, it cost about $120 in shipping. That seems steep...but maybe not so much when you consider that new foam for these seats costs about $200 a seat. (plus maybe some other pieces such as the webbing/grid, etc.) And perhaps you'll get lucky and find a yard that has what you want that is close enough for you to go pick it up which obviously means no shipping at all.

I put 2 new-looking, matching - and matching to the interior, which was important to me - cloth seats in my car for about $300 total. That seemed worth it to me to get rid of the lumpy crumbling foam. New/refreshed seats makes it seem like a whole new car.

    Good luck!

    Hi Jes Muse,

The image URL you placed was that of the instagram page, not the image URL. The image URL is in the HTML for the page.

The Sf Bay Area has many salvage yards, though many act as boutiques and may be very expensive, including self-serve yards usually in the East Bay.

Many salvage yards do not subscribe to this service, yet 14 pages of Volvo from zip 94949 in the vehicle search may wrangle you a 240 in the results with seats you may want.

You also have the issue treated in many brickboard articles of how to restore the 240 seat, seat web, seat back lumbar support, and usually cloth cover wash and stitch.

Try the Bay Area craigslist, if not already.
    https://sfbay.craigslist.org/

    To search for and ask.

And hopes other brickboard members can serve you up some options for your seat issues.

    Questions?

    Hope that halps.

The "chewed up by a dog" stuff is 30 year old broken down foam. Every time anyone sits in the seat, the foam gets "chewed up" against the hard parts of the seat and falls out the bottom. Almost anything you find in a salvage yard is going to have the same problem. IPD and (perhaps) others makes new foam for the seats. Re-upholstery will hold up for a lot longer than used 240 seats will. Many simply get a newer bucket from something else (I've seen Honda and VW seats used) and fabricate brackets to use them in place of the broken down/aged 240 seats.

Using the passenger foam for a rebuild of a drivers seat usually yields good foam. I believe online seat cover to rebuild are $150 each. If I was in the Bay Area I would hit the pic n pulls to find seats.

Good idea. I used passenger seat foam when I rebuilt my 240's driver seat years ago. You can further reinforce it by placing cut pieces of denim or some other reinforcement under the foam. Also, make sure you place all the support springs exactly where they belong.

BTW - You can also use the passenger seat upholstery too if you don't mind cutting a few holes in the upholstery to accommodate the driver's seat controls.

Do a search for Tony Hoffman's 240 seat rebuilding instructions. Very helpful! Think you can find a link to it in Art Benstein's Flame trap site.

Finally, if you can find them, I believe Volvo 940 or 740 seats will slip right in and are more comfortable than 240 seats. 850, V70 and some other newer Volvo models will fit too with new brackets.
