Airbag Module compatibility 900

1994 940. Trying to replace an Airbag Module number 0285 001 040. I have two other ones, 0285 001 042, and 0285 001 122. They 'look' the same, and came from 1994 940s. The other Volvo number is 35 44 163, and I have 35 44 162. Does anyone knows if they can be swapped?

    Airbag Module compatibility 900

    Dear tedv,

Hope you're well. Volvo VADIS - a superseded dealer parts/service database - shows that Airbag Module #3544162 was used in 1993 940s, while Airbag Module #3544163 was used in 1994 940s.

In the 1994 models, a passenger airbag was provided, which unit was not present in the 1993 models, which had a driver-only airbag.

As the airbag module is mission-critical, I'd err on the side of caution. I'd not install an Airbag Module from a 1993 940 in a 1994 940. The earlier unit (#3544162)likely would not be able to trigger the passenger-side airbag and might not work at all.

DEATH DANGER WARNING: Before trying to remove the driver's seat, remove the negative battery cable clamp from the battery terminal, and put the clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it. This cuts power supply to the SRS (Airbag) System. The airbag sensor is under the driver's seat, affixed to the floor pan. If this sensor is banged - if you drop the seat on it, or drop a tool on it - the airbag could deploy. This can be lethal, at close quarters. It will also be costly: a new sensor is about $900.00.

Note: Part #3544162 is "no longer available". Only part #3544163 showa availability.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Thanks, Spook! Makes sense. I was mistaken in thinking that the 162 was also from a 1994, but apparently not.

There is a Reset Service for $40 which I have used successfully in the past for other cars... Always an option.

        Dear tedv,

Hope you're well. I'm puzzled by your mention of a "reset service". If the SRS light is on, there's a re-set procedure in the FAQs. In short, disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal. This cuts power to the SRS Module and most everything else. AWait, say, 30 minutea to allow any charged capacitors to discharge. Then, re-connect the cable clamp to the battery terminal and drive the car. If the SRS warning light stays "out", all's well. If it comes back on, try this procedure two more times. If, after three re-set tries the SRS light stays on, the module likely is defective.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
